Coolant Freezing

Post by Kei King »

Well it's that time of the year again. Just a heads up to all importers & people importing direct from Japan this fall & winter.

A reminder that engine coolant does freeze if it not up to spec. Some vehicles from Japan have weak coolant that will not handle our cold Canadian winters. This is often caused by the owners constantly topping up with pure water.

Ask your seller or broker to check the coolant before shipping out. A good precaution is to change it anyways. While they are at it, get them to check the rad. Replace (only) if needed. Much cheapr to buy one at that point then to wait until it arrives in Canada.

I didn't think you were directing the warning to me personally, so no flatter misappropriated here, but you might have hurt the feelings of the rest of the members telling them they aren't special

Not just coolant, remember that a reputable importer will always change ALL fluids, filters, and belts on importing. anyone importing for themselves should do the same.

I've noticed most actually wait for the vehicle to hit Canada... and even sometimes... until it has a deposit on it... to do anything. Too late in that case for the freezing issue.

Changing ALL fluids includes windshield washer fluid. My rear washer was freezing at +5. Turned out to have plain water with lots of algae in it. Now that it has Cdn washer fluid, no more issues.
