Delica in Florida

Post by rhdpanda »

I just wanted to introduce myself and my Delica. I am Phil and Live in Orlando, Florida, the land of theme parks. My Delica is a 1992 L300 Exceed Crystal-Lite. Some of the cool and interesting parts of this car is that it is not only a Manual it is a 4-cylinder Gas Engine (4G64). I have only had it a few hours and I have already had some issues. Issue number one is that I was half an inch away from hitting the garage door when I got it home and issue number two is that on the way home one of the belts broke on the drive. If anyone happens to know what is the alternative belt on an American car.

Selling RHD cars in the USA is what I do. It is just easier to do in Florida. But for the people who might ask. Yes it is a legal, registered and Insured car, and no, I am not driving the car on a dealer tag.

I heard once that the 25-year-rule is 'loosely interpreted' in Florida. I suspect the import laws are more a state-thing in America than a federal-thing like here in Canada. The individual states have much more power in certain areas than our provinces. rhdpanda, can you elaborate?

Anyway, rhdpanda, I'm not sure, but if you have the same gasoline engine as the Dodge Raider or the Ram50 you might want to call up Dodge. They and Mitsubishi have been in bed together since the Colt (which was a Mitsubishi Galant) of the 70's.

Regardless, welcome to the club. It must be fun to see the locals getting sore necks as they spin around for a second look. We see it all the time when we drive south, but that's probably more due to us being from another country! "Those crazy Canucks!" say the Oregonians, and the Nevandans, and the Minnesotans.

The belts are as follows:

Power Steering - NAPA XL 9390
Alternator - NAPA XL 9400
Air Con- NAPA XL 9375

I believe the XL is just the NAPA brand. I have already done these on the gasser.

You are correct that import laws are set up state by state. I can't speak for the entire United States but, for example, Florida allows cars that are 15 years and older to be brought into the state easily by a legal importer and can then be used and sold in any other state. Newer cars can also be be brought in, but must be registered as an AFP (Assembled From Parts) car and must also provide picture documentation showing the assembly process. Unfortunately Georgia legislature has passed laws that RHD cars can not be registered in the state, but cars that are already registered will still be allowed in the state.
