Re: Just flipped my van
Your van was significant for me because it was the first one I ever got a live tour of before I got mine (when we met you in the Can Tire parking lot). Therefore I'm saddened to hear of this.
Nishby, good point about the trailer loading, one to notice and heed for sure for those of us with new hitches as yet untested.

Re: Just flipped my van
Thanks for all the support and some PMs with leads on new vans. It looks like this will be a writeoff, but I still haven't heard anything from ICBC yet, it's only been 24 hours. I think there were a few contributing factors to the crash. The load was near the limit of the trailer. The hardi plank siding was hanging off the end of the 9' trailer by 3' so any shift in the load would have put some lift on the trailer hitch and reduced my traction. I was in 2WD without the hubs locked. I'd just come out of the s-curve and was hit by a strong cross wind. The trailer fairly high, with solid 3.5' high sides. Once the wobbling started I tried to slow down from 70km/h, but that made the issue worse. I should have sped up to try and pull out of it, but with my family in the van and me losing control speeding up seemed like a bad idea at the time. The whole event probably took less and 10 seconds, but it seemed like a lifetime.
I'll try and get in touch with Glen @ CCAuto and see if he can help me out at all.
Here are some pictures of the damaged van:

Re: Just flipped my van
ouch!!!!!!!!, Sorry for your loss
My wife is an autobody refinisher and only one word came off her mouth............. start shopping!( I guess that's 2 words
) It is not impossible to fix it, but it will cost as much if not more than to get a "new" one. Plus good luck trying to find someone willing to tackle that job
. She says that basically, if the damage "travel" into the roof and side pillars, that"s the end!!!
I"m glad that the van did protect everybody inside the way it did( I assume everybody is OK) and good hunting for a new jewel. pierre and mary

Re: Just flipped my van
Yup, everyone escaped serious injury. My two young boys didn't get hurt at all and the only cuts I got were when I climbed out of the smashed out rear window. My wife got the worst of it and has a bit of road rash on her left arm were it touch the ground after her window smashed. It could have been so much worse. Sure puts the loss of the van into perspective.

Re: Just flipped my van
Hey Adam, glad you're ok and hopefully your wife too (and she be turned off Delica by the sad experience).
From your pictures it looks like you landed on your side and stayed that way. Nice thing with those Delica is that they are taller than wide so once on their side it's a lot harder to keep on rolling to their roof like a normal car would do...
And I agree with Pedro, start shopping! I'd say Jesse's 400 would be a nice one to go for... Are you gonna buy it back from ICBC if (when) they write it off?
Cheers,
David

Re: Just flipped my van
I was interested in buying the van back from ICBC, I guess it depends on what they want for it. I definitively wanted the WVO kit, trailer hitch and DVD player, but I guess I'll have to see what they'll offer me.

Re: Just flipped my van
Hello Adam and family,
Good to hear you and the family made it through safe. That looks a lot worse than mine did after I tipped over - so expect a write off. Plus I think ICBC would rather give you money hoping you don't buy another RHD - just take one more off the road.
Start gathering prices of similarly equipped vans so you can decide if the settlement is fair. If you are interested I can PM details of my claim last year. The unfortunate thing for you is prices seem to have dropped in the last year and that will affect your settlement.
Good luck, and shiny side up...

Re: Just flipped my van
Hi, Adam,
Sorry to see this happen to you. its good you, wife & the 2 kids were all right.
as per your van for sure sorry to say this. they will write it off. but you cannot buy it now as an owner, before you can. now they change policy, only wrecker could buy. i dont know why but you still try to get as much accesories you put in the van. like trailer hitch, vege oil conversion & other impt thing.
as per fixing it i don tthink its worth to fix it. better to buy new one. thna fix it lots, lots of time involve to fix it.
hope everything is well to your family.

Re: Just flipped my van
Adam
Very happy to hear your family is okay.
Hopefully, your wife is not put off on Delica's from the incident.
I've seen the classic wobble-flip quite a few times over my course of driving. Could happen to literally any vehicle once the pendulum effect starts.
Good vibes heading your way and crossing my fingers that ICBC treats you well.

Would you post a link - tried searching and it must use the same crappy search engine as this forum.Youbou wrote:Glad you are all Ok!
You might want to have a look at the posting on Ivoac titled, "ICBC .... oh ICBC"
It is interesting how things are changing.
Good luck with your new search!

Re: Just flipped my van
Just a thought, could it be possible that perhaps it may turn out you could be further ahead financially to not process it through ICBC and part it out yourself instead? May be more work but will claiming this on your insurance be increasing your premiums for years to come, and is it possible that the sum of selling all the parts could amount to more than ICBC will pay anyway?
