Diesel Dwn South

Headed to Seattle in Sept for annual pilgrimage.

Silly question, I know most of the big names sell diesel, but like Mohawk, Max is highly regarded, what is the preffered choice in the States.

Apparently in the US diesel quality varies much more than it does in Canada. I've heard that you should try to avoid Flying J in the US at all costs (low quality diesel), however as their prices are generally much cheaper than the competition, your best bet is often to fill at the station across the street from a flying J as they will be trying to compete on price, but have better quality fuel.

My first choice in the U.S. is Chevron, second choice Shell. At home I use Chevron, Petro-Canada or Mohawk, whichever is more convenient.

U.S. Chevron stations take Canadian credit cards at the pump. Shell stations do not.

Pretty well every Shell station in the I-5 corridor between Vancouver and Portland has diesel. Not all Chevron stations do.

Diesel costs more than premium gas in Washington and Oregon.

Be prepared to attract a lot of attention.

I was just down in washington today and the price of diesel was lower than 89 octane !! It works out to about 75-85 cents a liter And i have found that the quality is not bad .You have to figure the buying power of 350 million people plus the amount of diesel vehicles on the road down there they can't have really bad quality. (although green1 is right to say to avoid the really cheap places that probably water down the gas/diesel)

The best price will be found off the highway in everett washington or arlington (i think it is exit 208 or 206)

What annual trip are we talking about here ?? bumpershoot ??

That is a significant change from last fall! Last time I was there premium was $US3.20, while diesel was $US3.30 (or more).

We've been taking the kids to Woodland Park Zoo for the past 7 years.It'll be the 7 months old first trip down South.
We all just got Nexus passes so it should be clear sailing. It's a great Zoo. Over the years we have expanded our stay. We're doing 3 days this year.Staying at the Westin this year. Stay 2 nights and the 3rd is free. Not bad for a 4 star.The kids look forward to it every year. Hoping they will let me park out front as the Deli will not make the underground. Well 2/3rds of it will.

If you get the Shell / Flying J free membership card here, you get free showers with a fill-up in their truck stops in USA & Canada ... the ones on the I-5 thru California were super clean and friendly and we slept in quiet corners of the parking lot. I use Flying J diesel in lower mainland, as cheapest (with cash), or Max in the very cold here. Didnt see much diesel off the I-5 in Washington, the cheaper places like ARCO are gas only. I did find various brands of outside "pay at the pump" machines not recognizing canadian debit cards.

Right Hand Drive didnt seem to confuse folks, when I said from BRITISH Columbia they all nodded knowingly (as visions of cups of tea & kilts & British Right Hand Drive danced in their heads).

My wife and I are thinking of heading down to San Fransisco in the fall. Has anybody driven the coast from BC? Any tips or suggestions for the trip I can bring along? I would appreciate any info as this will be our first time driving south, in our Delica of course...:O)

Hi I just got back from a trip down south from montreal to atlanta and back in the psychedelica. Diesel is certainly not hard to find and I usually filled up at BPs with an average price of about $2.50 a gallon, not bad at all. I noticed no difference in the quallity of the fuel but I brought a couple of jerry cans of Biodiesel and also used fuel conditioner just in case. I find that most people in the USA, at least in the east, tend to mind their own beeswax and don't show much interest at all at our weird ride. Here in quebec, or anywhere in eastern canada, I can't drive anywhere, not even to work and back, without stares and pointing.

Oh, and on my last fill up I put 17litres of GAS in my tank! What a maroon! Took me three hours (and two crappy CanTire hand pumps) of syphoning to get it all out. I still have that awfull taste my mouth.

My biggest tip would be to bring a chilled out awesome attitude, have a blast and enjoy the coast. We did that drive (smithers to san fran) two winters ago. Loved it.

All of Hy 101 and Hy1 are great and worth seeing. Its a long slow trip to do the whole thing but if you have time worth it. If not try cutting across form I 5 at Eugene or Grants pass. Then you can see the redwoods and wine country ect. This will drop you onto the
Golden Gate. We stayed at the Touch Stone Hotel right next to Union Square. Great price next to everything. Tiny little rooms but clean.
If you cut across at Grants Pass its a two day drive. If you take the Victoria - Port Angeles ferry and turn west and do the whole coast
road it 3-4 days drive. We loved SF and can't wait to go back someday soon. Enjoy.

Wow, right on thanks for the tips guys. We have made a plan of travelling everywhere,so time is on our sides. We are hoping to spend a few weeks touring and seeing everything in between and play far too much disc golf ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFQ8S1LcioQ for instructions) The double mattress is going in the back and away we go! We are both very excited. I hope we don't get stuck at the boarder too long.
