Looking forward to the build pictures. Any ideas what you'll do to attach the front bumper/winch? With the front bumber removed there's access to the frame tubes, but they're small square cross sections sitting kinda high off the ground.

Cheers,
Kevin

It actually does! I thought the same thing for a while, then when I actually had camera in-hand it was gone... and gone for a while! Murphy's Law for me. I've even seen a motorcycle on the back rack at one time. Was quite surprised how similar it is to a Delica.

Now.... stop computing and get back to creating... what a slacker!...

I was going to say sorry, but I think this doesn't apply to you. I work with IBM guys and most of them are not so happy with the news.... Anyway, I had a couple of questions for you: You said you're planning a trip to South America with the Delica, right? I'd like to know which countries are you planning to visit and also what plans do you have to cross the Darien gap. I was investigating a little bit into that a few months ago, but never found specific info. I was planning to do the opposite, fly to Colombia buy me a nice Toyota or Land Rover for 1/100th of the price and then drive it up here. It's still a dream, but no time (money) for now.

Darian Gap is impassable by vehicle and I would say a personal health hazard if venturing through there on foot/canoe.

Will be going down through mex/panama/cr and then container ship to chile. drive down the to 'el tippo and then back up through Brazil. Container ship either back to the US or over to Australia. Not sure yet.

Plans are very loose and will be laid out along the way.

If you'd like more detailed info/real world experience with people either done or in progress of overlanding, I would recommend expeditionportal.com . Very good site for fellow overlanders.

IBM. Not sorry on my part. It was a cushy position and it made me gain weight sitting down. I may or may not return to that IT field. Depends. I may end up with a career change coming up.

I know they Darien Gap is closed. I am from Colombia and I've been to both sides of the border. There used to be a ferry service in the 90's but I guess it was not good business, because they stopped it. Now there are plans to create a road to open the Gap, but I'm not sure when this will happen.

Why are you going to Chile? You should not skip Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. You'll be missing tons of great places to see and visit. On the other hand if the cargo ship goes directly to Chile, maybe that's a good reason.

I'll keep reading this post to see how you're doing. This is interesting to me.

Very cool. Thx for the link. I know there are Delicas in Costa Rica, Colombia and Chile. Not sure about everywhere else.

Mechanics are not expensive there, and they'll help you with any problem you might have. That being said, it's better you brush up on your Español, or you'll be treated as another "rich gringo"...

Oh, one more thing... I share your feelings about the IT profession. I'm also ready for a career change. This is good for a number of years, but it's wearing out now.

Buena suerte!

Jumped back into IT at St.Paul's hospital helping people who help others.

End result. No playing with Delica mod's for a while :-(

But the job is rewarding and they let me play on weekends :-D
