Is this reasonable?

Post by aclarker »

Hi everyone,

April 29th I purchased a 1994 l400 Super Exceed SWB V6. I made the purchase through a broker. It is now coming to the end of June.... No Van. Has yet to leave Nagoya. My broker has stated that there was a back order on LHD lights from Germany... These lights were to be installed before the Van was to leave Nagoya Japan. Is this a reasonable amount of time to install the DOT lights and to have the Van shipped to Vancouver? I was told that shipping should only take a month. Installing the lights should not take another month should it? Am I being unreasonable? Where should my expectations be?

Thanks

PS love the site and the help that everyone gives.

I would be on my toes about the situation. Definitely get more info. However, if there was a back order on LHD spacegear lights, that may be your issue. Install is a walk in the park. Thing is, there is usually only 1 roro ship from each port every month, so if the lights were installed, and the June ship had already departed, that can slow things too.

shipping varies greatly, it can take as little as 11 days, or as much as 6 months depending on spots available, the amount you want to pay for shipping, and the exporter's connections with the shipping companies. Even the best importers/exporters frequently wait a month or slightly more for the right spot on a boat.

As for headlights, it takes about an hour to do the swap, but waiting for backordered parts is not something you have much control over. If you want the van quicker you may be able to arrange with the exporter to have him send you the van right away, and ship you the lights to install yourself whenever they arrive (they're small enough to take a plane and even if a week later than the vehicle leaving Japan, may arrive here at the same time)

well shipping takes between 10-13 days depending on either RORO or container, there is NO waitlist for either right now with the recession, I think the lights are the issue, no one wants to pay the cost for the Ecoded lights, and those who know the other fix arent telling what it is..... I would be asking some questions, are you getting a lifted up L400,, im trying to figure out why the Gas engine .... who is your seller?

I'm using Sean from Zen Autoworks (Broker & Great Guy) and I have purchased it from Brave Auto. The van will be my wifes to use and I don't trust her with a Diesel. If it were my choice I would of went Diesel. From my research Diesels need a little more attention with -40 weather in Calgary. She test drove the Pajero Diesel and hated the engine noise. To me it's like music to my ears. Happy wife Happy life.....

The L400 is not lifted but it is on my list of things to do when it arrives.
It is being shipped in a container. I'll try to get a hold of Sean again. Difficult as he has a day job.
Cheers,

These lights I feel are the problem. I suppose there is a large demand for them.. I'll get a hold of my broker again.

Thanks

Brave Auto has one of the best reps in the business so I wouldn't be too worried.

Hi aclarker,

Hope you are well.

You are Sean's (Zen Autoworks) customer so I do not really want to jump in here.

But incase you have not spoken to Sean.

We cannot buy OEM LHD Spacegear lamps here in Japan, Mitsubishi will not sell them to us so we therefore have to purchase and import them from Mitsubishi in Europe and there are a good number of different part numbers. LHD headlamp for this model Spacegear normally are not in demand and when we purchased our first batch we in fact cleaned out Mitsubishi Europe of LHD Spacegear Headlamps.
The remainder of our order went on back order and unfortunately Mitsubishi Japan sea freights the lamps to Europe..... yes a long winded way.
The delay has been waiting for the lamps to arrive in Europe and then turned around and sent to us here in Japan. The lamps are not huge but the box they do come in is..... rather huge so to keep costs down for all parties involved they are sent via sea freight.
It has also been difficult and slow dealing with no English speaking people in Europe which did not help matter much either.... what we thought we had correct numbers for were wrong etc etc etc..
Any way, the lamps arrived this week and I am now in the process of working out container arrangement and packing.......... I will be advising Sean next week shipping dates.

Unfortunately the back order and delay was a learning curve for me as I normally have the quickest turn around time in the business so to ensure this never happens again I now have that many LHD lamps here I could build a house out of the boxes.

Supplying the LHD lamps is done as a favour for customers as we offer them at cost but I do apologies for the delay and please do not blame Sean at Zen as he has been chasing me every day about them.

Cheers

It seems everything is resolved now.

And the other good news is... I think you're going to be the first L400 here in Calgary!!! I'd like to see the new van here. L300's are not very common, but I think I see 2 of them per week now; before I would only see Erebus' Deli. (we're both in the SW)

Great! Thanks for your attention to my concern. I was sure there was a reasonable exception.
