Inspection Edmonton AB

Post by Ricdin Ricdon »

Hi I was wondering if anyone knows of a (lax) place to get my out of province done here in edmonton. I keep hearing about some places that let the rear mount light slide, as well as headlights. your help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Ricdon

Hmmm. And you are a tour operator? Why not get the mods done properly and have a safe vehicle on the road?
Sorry, just my opinion....

Headlights are a must.... Daytime running lights and the rear middle light are pretty cheap... might as well do them and give the government less ammunition for changing the import laws.

Just my two cents.

I was thinking about the third brake light. Why not rewire the DELICA light on the back of the van to be a brake light, should be high enough and light up the whole back of the van.

James

I know - not everyone has that light, but that's not my fault :D :D

in the daytime you can't even tell that that delica light is on, not to mention it lights up the word delica blue and not red. (the surrounding red bit doesn't appear to light up at all)

I think the best solution for a centre mount brake light would be the ones they put on a lot of chev SUVs and the chev Astro van, it's an LED strip that should be available at most wreckers (they've been in use for years on a wide variety of domestic vehicles) and would mount on the roof, and I bet it would look completely stock.

DOT lighting

Headlights are required , side markers are required , daytime running lights are required . High mount stop light is NOT required . Any inspection that says it is , question it and ask for proof that it is required . There is a regulation that allows a multi purpose vehicle of not more than 1.8m wide with a passenger capacity of more than 5 does not require high mount light . Don`t waste money buying or installing them , they don`t need it .

I have to partially disagree on this one, first, it will save a LOT of hassle if you just install it, regardless of whether it is technically required or not, second, it IS a safety feature, these are worth having.

Technically it may not be required, but inspection facilities tend to insist on them, and they are a good idea anyway, and they're a cheap and easy install. for me I put this in the "just do it" category...

High mount light

No wait I completely agree put something on your vehicle that is not required by law just because the inspector is too lazy to check . If anyone needs one installing (for no reason) I have really nice LED units in stock that we can install for $120 plus tax . As Green1 says "just do it" !!!!!!

put something on your vehicle that is not required by law
the paint and the stereo aren't required by law either, neither are the bush-bar, or my fog lights, or hundreds of other items on the vehicle, that doesn't mean I shouldn't have them.
If anyone needs one installing (for no reason)
safety is not "no reason", and it's not just the one inspector who does your OOP inspection, but every one that does roadside stops etc (and we know these vehicles are targeted by those inspectors)
I have side marker lights and centre mount brake light and DRL, none of which are required in Alberta, but all of which make my vehicle a little safer, and all of which make it that much less likely that a roadside inspection that I may drive through in BC will find fault with my vehicle, for the cost of doing these modifications (practically zero) they are well worth it.

As I said I have lots in stock that I bought in when they were required . I will gladly sell them or install them for anyone wanting one . I have to admit I think the vehicle is safer with a high mount even Mitsubishi started putting them in the vans in `92 . My problem with this is that the inspectors still do not check the law and are failing vehicles incorrectly . If the chance of extending the ability to import JDM vehicles is there then everyone needs to be aware of the requirements and all on the same page as to what fails and what passes . If this whole inspection process was uniform across the country it would be one less arguement for stopping the importing .

but we must do more than technically comply, we must APPEAR to comply. People that squeak through on technicalities do nothing to help the cause, we need them to know, without digging through the regs, that we will do whatever it takes to make these vehicles safer.

WE know that these vehicles are good, but we need them to understand the same. getting in to arguments with inspectors over such minor things only serves to give them a worse impression than they already have, and just makes life more difficult for everyone. People in BC are already having trouble finding inspection facilities that are willing to look at a RHD vehicle, lets not push the remaining ones in to giving up on them as well.

Rumour has it that there is going to be yet another change to the BC inspection process as of May15th . This should hopefully address all the `grey` areas of the current inspection process and educate CMVSS officers of what to be looking for in a roadside inspection situation . I completely agree that over preparing the vehicle is good , but I don`t like to see people waste money installing something that is not required on an equivalent North American vehicle . There are several vans driving round with high mount brake lights installed but still using Japanese headlamps ??? Does the high mount stop that van being checked ??? I think concentrating on what we need and installing it correctly is the best way to go as TC will inspect these vehicles for compliance and will not be giving gold stars for the guy who did more to his than the guy who did what was necessary .

Road side inspections

Post by ccautos »

I was talking the other day with Brian Kangas from BC inspections who said that as of May 15th there will be more road side checks being carried out on right hand drive vehicles . We will soon see if this occurs !!!
