Campervans

Post by Manitoba Delica »

HEy folks, my parents are thinking of buying a camperized JDM. They've looked at Toyata Hiace campers and found some on Terra2 imports that are Delica campers... I thought I would ask if anyone owns one, has advice where to buy one, warnings, recommendations on models, etc... Thanks for any thoughts on this.. They all look like really fun vehicles.

The Hiace is a very good option as long as you are only planning trips that down hill...
I am not a speed demon but they are extremely underpowered. If you are serious about a JDM camper then Isuzu Elf is in my mind the best option. I see them from time to time but the are not very common.

Do you have any picture of a camperized Elf? I'd be curious to see how they are... And the Elf, is it the one you're driving these days or is it another Isuzu model?

Cheers,

Hello

Here is an camper Elf. It is the same as my crane truck and as I think you realized yesterday they are really not that big. They come in 3200, 3600 and 4300 cc diesel engine as well as 4x4. The are more like a motor home than a weekender but they are a very good option, if you can find one. I have only seen a few during my years as a JDM enthusiast, but if it is anything like my truck the millage is similar to the Delica.

Saw this campervan at Crown Tech Auto. Was probably the car from Terra2. Looked great, but I don't get way they are 4x4. This car was so low to the ground you could not even get over a pebble. If it's the same engine as a Delica, I wouldn't want to go up a hill with all the weight :)

The 4x4 version has more of a lift than the version in the image. The elf comes in a 2700 cc but if you get them with the 3200 cc or more you'll be better of. Indeed you won't be flying up the hill but you'll get there.
My truck is 4300 cc and it is gr8 on fuel (for its size).

If you like my camper set up we can go for a trip any time. Or if you are more in to gardening let me know.

my friend has a unturbo'd toyota hiace. I think it has just as much punch as the Delica (if not more), and gets about 10 more miles per gallon... i was impressed. of course the downside is that it is much more sissy, smaller room for wheels, and a longer wheel base.

93 and newer Hiace's can be aquired with the 3 liter, KZ engine I think, that really pulls. Test drove two 2wd Hiace vans with the 3L and they pulled very hard, enough power for easy burn outs... both, as seems common, were 5 speeds. No comparsion in power to a 89 Hiace I drove in BC. Our 3l Nissan TD seems much more sluggish than the Toyota; and our little 2wd p/u is quite far ahead of a Delica in power.
