I think my Delica just died (maybe not) - Part 2 (more pics)

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

I think my Delica just died (maybe not) - Part 2 (more pics)

Post by piyeguyo »

Hi again and Thx for all the replies to my original post. Here's the continuation after reading the responses...

I took the plastic covers off (it took me a few mins to realize they slide off :-) and took some more pics. I didn't realize the van had so many belts!!

So, I removed 2 belts: 1 was cut and the other one (very thin belt) I cut myself. I wanted to cut another one that is still hanging but still looks kinda in good shape, so at the end decided to leave it there.

I think there are still 3 belts: 1 is good, 1 is hanging and the other one is still in place but it looks upside down (the side with teeth or whatever they're called is showing, and I think this side is supposed to be against the moving parts for friction purposes...)

So, could you guys please comment on the pics and/or give me advice. I turned the engine again and the white fan is moving, still making some noises, but I think this is because of the loose belt. By looking at the belts, I think the mechanic here in Calgary only replaced 1 and he left the others untouched. I might be wrong, but comparing the shape of the belt with yellow letters (see pics) vs the others, I can tell this is the only one that looks kinda new. I've had the van for 2 years, but I've only put 24,xxx kms on it, so the belt that is intact still looks in pretty good shape. (Just one comment about the yellow letters: in some of the pics the fan is moving, so the belt looks black with no letters, but in some of the pics where the engine was off, the letters can be seen)

But I don't know much about this, so I'm only speculating.

Regards and thx in advance for any advice. One final question: The mechanic is 30 mins away from my house, and I'm not sure if I can drive the van or not. Should I try to drive it or should I tow it to the mechanic?

Hi fabio,
check if your harmonic balancer is some you will hear some noice on it
its the one who has 2 grove on it that holds the crankshaft pulley, usually sometime the rubber between the pully is gone. thats why you can hear the noice clumnking sound.
check this one. then go further.

There are times when you really do need a mechanic, and this is one of them. With all the best will in the world, there are limits to what a forum like this can do.

I wouldn't drive the van. You've already had one major malfunction. How much more do you want to risk?

Trying to view those on my bberry, but looks like alternator belt, rad fan belt and power steering belt

Your timing belt and tensioners are under the plastic cover closer to the block of your engine.

If I was you, I'd tow it to the mechanic cause your soon going to drain your batteries without having the alternator spinning.

Youre sure the timing belt was done already though? The ones your showing aren't too major. You could probably replace them yourself but if it was me, I'd have a pro do the work and give it a good once over.

you probably paid a lot of money for your delica. dont take any chances and get the tow. then get CAA for next time. theres a good chane if you drive it, youll need a tow anyhow, but you wont be waiting at home for it.

if tow trucks are an issue just sign up for BCAA over the phone, hang up, and call in right away. and yes they let you do that, its how i became a member, cozz the tow was gonna cost just as much as a years membership with 6 free tows

just a thought!

I think the timing belt (which is the really critical one in terms of complete engine failure with lasting damage) is wider than the ones seen on the picture... - and yes, the timing belt is under the plastic cover at the front of the engine block - so judging from the pictures it is only the belts running the fan and waterpump / alternator / ac and power steering that seem messed up - but I would definitively not drive my van in such condition - I probably wouldn't even attempt to start it up again...

The CAA deal works well - they actually endorse it... I didn't even go as far as calling for enrolling, hanging up and calling back for towing within the minute or so... after breaking down on the coquihalla hwy with an overheated engine I called CAA, signed up and requested the tow truck all in one call with the same operator..

Also a point of consideration: If the mechanic is 30 minutes away, it'll likely be a distance over 10kms which I believe is the break-off after which (if you only have a basic membership) you have to pay the tow truck driver $$ for each km driven over... It may be worthwile to sign up for the premium membership... not only do you get a nicer sticker for the bumper... but they actually tow you way farther before charging you extra dollars....

Good luck..

Piyeguyo, I am a painter who is getting more into small time diesel mechanics but I am not a mechanic.

However, from your description and the pictures ~ I really get the impression that a pulley is loose or has come free from it's mount and the knocking sound is the pulley itself bouncing around in the belt webbing. This would explain why the loose belt is chafed on the edges. I also noticed that the teeth on the belt are quite worn. Does it sound like someone left a tool in the engine when it runs? I heard a story about this happening once before, as told to me by Glen at CC Autos.

I would not run the engine until it is fixed. Get it towed to a garage that can handle this job (i.e.; a diesel mechanic), unless of course you know what you are doing. I myself would be very apprehensive about doing the job myself if I could get someone better to do the job. Section three of the 4D56 engine manual, that can be found in the "technical downloads" part of the Delica Wiki pages, has technical drawings of what your configuration should look like ~ a worth while read.

Why not drop Glen a line (PM) and get his view on this ~ perhaps he can shed some light onto the matter as he has experienced it before.

Falco.

hi, its easy you can do it by yourself, just check this pully. check the harmonic balancer if there is any play & go from there. thats one of the reason thats why your belt snap & goes other way. anyway it has 4 belt for thsi delica not 3 o.k.

hope this help you.
