I don't mean to critisize but do you see what appears to be a crack in the frame on the R/H side of the picture, where the side step mounts?

Hi bae146,

I am new to this forum and most of you probably do not know me so your question is not taken in offence and never would be.

It is not a crack as there is no real stress on this part of the frame unless a 300kg sumo had climbed in and out a few times although it still would not cause a crack here.

It is just surface rust stain from where the water runs then drips off the rail over time....... 100% guaranteed no crack.

One of the reasons we do not paint the underbodies or chassis rails etc with a spray can is so the importer can see exactly what he/she is getting without wondering what was under the paint. I realise some agents when doing this take "before and after" photos of the underbodies but the oldest trick in the book is the before photos are of what they want you to see and then they paint everything. It looks pretty but like I said, it is one of the oldest tricks around.
The other reason we do not do this is because we also supply vehicles, in particular the Spacegears including this one to dealers in Australia although they are now buying more later models but some still buy the early ones. You might not be aware but the Australian import and compliance system is very strict and if any vehicles have chassis rust (minor surface is ok) or a crack, the vehicle would have to be re-exported out of Australia or destroyed.
Australian compliance shops are anti painted underbodies simply because they cannot see through paint. Government officials from the compliance system randomly inspect compliance shops and will single out a vehicle to double check it meets the compliance rules. If the official finds any structural evidence for why the underbody was painted then both the importer and compliance shop have a problem and it is a costly one at that.
There is a strike system (three strikes and you are out) for the compliance shop and a good few have had their doors closed. You simply cannot start up another shop around the corner the next day as to be come a compliance shop takes months and sometimes even a year or two and tens of thousands of dollars. The idea of the system was to improve the condition of the vehicles and slow the volume of vehicles being imported which it did over night.

Any way... a bit of insight to the Australian system which is a good system (parts of it) as it does help insure less below standard vehicles are imported there.

Cheers

PS.... some close up photos for you.

That thing looks super clean ! I love the unpainted underside ! I hate when they paint it too !! Far too easy to cover up rust.
Looks like you could eat off the underside of that van ! (well, not that little rusty area)
Could you throw up some interior pictures ? (Other than the one) :-D

Hi Mark,

Very nice and clean L400, good find! I'm an admitted L300 addict but on behalf of those that would be interested in this van or other L400, how do you intend to get it BC certified? Will it come with the certified headlights 'cause I haven't seen any on the market yet... It would suck for some Canadian enthusiast to buy this one or another one and not be able to insure it as headlights would not be available.

Regards,
David

ps. very nice color too! :-)

No problem at all.

I understand it is due to the headlamps but I will have this solved very shortly so watch this space.

Cheers
