Rough starting... what more to check?

Post by jlowahke »

I just purchased a 1994 Pajero Exceed 2.8L Diesel, and after driving it home (1000km) to my rural home town, I've been having trouble starting it. Sometimes it takes 2 or 3 times before it will start, not just in -10 degrees, but also in +6 degree weather. The mechanic where I bought it said they already changed the fuel filter before I bought it, I changed all 4 glow plugs, I changed the solenoid, and it's still starting rough... what else could be wrong?

On a side note, the glow plug light goes off awfully quickly (a couple seconds) even in cold weather... is it normal for it to go off that fast? My partner thinks someone did some after-market re-wiring and wired the glowplug light to the airbag SRS light that takes longer to go off, and when the SRS light goes off, you can hear a 'click' like you usually hear when glowplugs go off... any thoughts?

Glowplug light goes off pretty quick in this version, much faster than waiting for the clicks on the 2.5... wonder if it needs glowplugs? Might be worth a looksie? Also check the bar for corrosion. My first thought though, is to ask them if it did this before they changed the FF. If not, they may have gotten air in the system... ?

Me too!!! I've got a 1993 Pajero... starts really rough. There aren't any clicks to wait for when starting... I've replaced glow plugs already... it starts but not until a few cranks and then it's pretty rough. :o Any ideas

hi, first of all, this thing might help you guys.
if any of your pajero never been clean the injector pls do so. as this will help you to keep your cold morning start up.
as most of this injector from pajero & delica has varnish as it never re-clean or pre seat again since new in japan.
when the injector has varnish inside it create few fuel & dont hold the pressure of the injector coming out from the injector the result is that you got less fuel to supply the engine when its cold & thats creare rough idle. not enough fuel or injector is stuck. but when engine is hot or warm its o.k.
now as per idling issue, it depends on what oil you used in your engine also the weather contribute on this if its very cold.pls check the antifreeze mix they do. try to do 70/30 or 60%antifreeze/40% water mix of antifreeze.
replace glow plug only if no continuity & if you think its not working. you cannot just replace glow plug if you are having problem starting . check it first. dont do replace it.
then adjust the idle if your pajero 2.8 has water cooled one with automatic idle cooling adjustment like newer delica.
as you can see it already show you on the u.k. site. but other pajero 2.8 has a manual throttle cable attached on it.
like i have now march 1994 Pajero V26W 2.8 liter but with manual throttle cable on it.
then used fuel additive as much as possible for cold weather. so compensate the cold weather thru your pump & fuel line not to freeze. if need one i do have a bottle in stock cost about $20 used for 32 times fill up.
used this for 31/2 now no problem even when its cold.
now see from there. then check the timing later.
now try to do this thing maybe this will help you guys.
hope i can help:
Cheers;
Mardy
