Changing rear diff fluid (help)

Anything I should know before changing my own rear diff fluid? I figure it's just drain it, fill it right?

I do have a question about the bolt size, does anyone know the size socket I'd need - I just know I don't have anything large enough in my current kit?
I don't think I have an LSD, so regular gear oil would be fine (other Delica site says 80W90 GL-5 oil)?

Plan to document the process so others can see - I know it's pretty straight forward but I know I always like to see someone's step by step when I do something for the first time....

Im looking to do this in the near future so a step by step pic guide would be really usefull. I presume its crack the fill plug first then the drain plug ......

Yup, you're right...it's very straight forward and if you don't have a limited slip then yes, all you need is GL-5

Steve,

15/16 inch socket fits the filler plug & drain. I think it equates to either 23 or 24mm (the only 2 I dont have)

Also it would be a good idea to take it for a good run to warm up the fluid before draining

You do want to make absolutely sure that you do or don't have an LSD. If you have an LSD and put in normal oil, you will destroy the LSD.

If I remember right (do a search) there is often a sticker on the LSD to indicate such. But I can't remember any details.

Other than that, ya, dead easy. Just have to have the right oil.

ya that LSD sticker has me a little worried-i don't have a sticker, but i'd hate to find out later that the sticker fell off.....wish there was something more permanent to mark the LSD.

Thanks GC for the socket info - heading to canadian tire in the morning first thing.
shoud be interesting as were supposed to get a huge dump of snow tonight!

To find out for sure the type of diff you have jack up the rear end until both wheels are off the deck and turn one. If the other side turns in the same direction it's a LSD; if it turns in the opposite direction its a regular 'ole dif

unless the lsd fried like mine seems to be then it will turn like a regular diff!! i tink the people in japan must not have put the right stuf in because my LSD does not work right. The wheels turn opposite directions !!!

Not to thread jack but can tht be fixed ??

Yes...pull out the LSD, desmantle, clean, replace clutch pack and springs. Fairly easy, just need to find the corresponding parts for rebuild.

Hi,

Socket size is 24mm. Fluid ....I would use the Penzoil GL5 80W/90 yellow plastic can good for LSD or conventional diff...so you should be safe with it if you're not sure if you have LSD or not. ALso takes about 2 liters.

Typically I have noticed that although the platforms for the Starwagon and Space Gear are different, a lot of the components used are the same. My guess is the drain bolt on the diff is likely to be the same. Having said that ~ the bolt is easily accessible, not like you have to remove parts to get at it. Why not lie on the ground with a few sockets and try them out until you find the correct one? Then you will know for sure.

The reason why I asked is my socket set only goes up to 21 or 22mm, so I want to make sure I buy the right size for the diff
