Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
Reading the description of what they did to it, two things: they probably paid too much for it in the first place if it was in the shape they describe; and in the second place, they poured too much into it! If they hadn't put that much money/labour into it, they wouldn't be asking 85k$ for it.
And yes, even with everything they did, still too much! Sure, it looks nice, but not 85k$ nice, even if it's a California-ride.

I still have a shorter wheel base, and larger wheels and who needs a poptop when I have a roof tent now... and lockers/air/winch are a far cry less than sinking in another $75,000 (besides, it doesn't even have a snorkel... pfffft)
Delica's rule.

Snorkel??? You keep teasing us with it but still haven't seen any pictures yet!
Hey, I can tease too! I have a few projects coming as well that I'm sure would make you happy:
-WVO, got the kit, got the 2 tanks today (Beauties! Thanks EricN and Fishslapper!), got the filtration system going, got a excellent oil source (already have close to 300 gallons (anyone need good oil?!?), only need to get the lines, figure out the filler and put it all together.
-Got a winch ready for install (Warn 8943, their workhorse).
-Got 2" lift, need to install.
-Oh, and I've got a second Delica coming next month!
Have I got your attention yet?
And what I don't have anymore are my 2 VW buses, sadly the last one left last week. But it's a journey, it's now what you have but what you do with it isn't it?
Cheers to all,
David (bragging a little)

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
I can't say I made the switch right away. My very first car I had was a VW Bug - Baja style. It was awesome.
To be honest, I had never felt the way about another car (not even our Fiat Spyder) like I did about the Bug... until we bought the Delica. My enthusiasm for the Delica reminded me of buying that Bug. Mind you, the VW was considerable cheaper! $500.

Still got both my busses 78 deluxe westy and a 88 westy I'm looking at getting a Delica for a daily driver especially in the winter I was skeptical about the Deli till I drove one nice truck! it's still not a bus though but a close second!
Looking for a Crystal lite loaded Delica at the right price!

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
I actually looked at getting a VW Van prior to getting the Delica.... Went to Van Wonder in North Van a couple of times to look at some of the vans he has in the back... but eventually decided to go for the Delica... I still have a 1982 Dodge Ram B150 Camping Van with a slant six 225 - and although there are probably not many fans of domestic vans on this forum, I have to conclude that my Dodge Van (at least with the gutless but extremely reliable slant six 225 cu-in motor) is virtually indestructible with close to 300'000 km's on the original engine - and runs like there is no tomorrow - with absolute minimal or no maintenance...
But I still like the Delica better for some reason... it just looks cooler and I really like the idea of the 4wd in the winter...
Anyway, that's my little story and I'm sticking to it...
Cheers

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
I've had a 69 baja bug, a 71 beetle, a 73 window van, a 72 westy, a 74 westy, an 84 Vanagon, and now The Deli.......had a few other vehicles in between but always loved driving the cab over style van....probably why I was drawn to the Delica.

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
Very first vehicle was a 69 beetle, then a 72 beetle and then many many other vehicles from a 69 T-bird with suicide doors, to an '89 Jaguar Van den Plas with the 12 cyl, a 71 VW westy and then eventually the Delica. I think I just like less than common vehicles regardless of the genre.

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
I had to respond.
Today was a sad sad day.
Today I sold our 74 Westy. Immaculate condition, original paint even with next to no rust.
I real terms that is like 97% intact.
I felt soo depressed driving behind it with the Delica to the Insurance place to return
my plates and put his on it. We had to dig it out of the wintering spot in my
cousin's back yard. About 3 feet of snow for about 20 feet.
<sigh>
Laugh, I know it sounds bizarre but after sharing a ton of experiences, trips,
camping trips, my girls getting older, the boys getting bigger.. it was a member
of the family.
Get this.. it's name was foxy. (Bright orange bus) It was sold to R. Foxx. Family
of 5.. promised they would keep it's name since it fit right in!
Ok, I'm done crying.
I sort of wish the delica was camperized.. had a poptop. Oh well.
Who knows what the future holds.

I understand completely. For some unknown reason, certain things (and people) who's paths cross our own have a huge impact, far beyond what any rational analysis would indicate. But that is life.
Enjoy the memories ... and remember the times and lessons.

Re: how many made the switch from vw's to delica's
Count me in as well! I just made the jump over when my '81 Westy, the ol' Rusty Bus blew motor #2 after just under 400k. Problem was there wasn't body left to justify a third engine. Too bad, every option worked perfect too! That meant a cold propane fridge, and a hot gas heater! I drove my Jeep YJ in the meantime, good for hauling my kayaks, bad for hauling my family. Come spring, I will buy or fab a rack for the Deli to carry the 'yacks and I should have the best of both worlds in one parking stall, even if we are back to tent camping!

You can always get a roof-tent. Have to figure out the kayak situation, but must be doable.bikepoor wrote:even if we are back to tent camping!
