Hello all. I am a newbie here but thought I might chime in on this subject. To give you some background, I'm not yet a delica owner but hope to be soon. I do however have some experience with diesel engines and have some advice for our cold calgary winters.

The best thing you can do is change the Engine oil. if you are still running with a 15W40 or 10W30 at -35 you are just asking for trouble. If you want a detailed explanation email me, but needless to say it is like trying to start your engine with tar. What I do, and my company does on all of our equipment in the winter, is use a 0W30 synthetic oil. we actually run this all year round in some applications. I'm driving the deli to Calgary on thursday and hanging around for a couple weeks (let me know if you want to meet for a coffee/beer). Hoping for an uneventful journey out there and hoping I can get the engine started once I'm there.. it doesn't sound like I'll have access to a garage so I'll be parking outside.

I've got fresh fluids (15w40 )and filters, a new optimum battery, good glow plugs. Has been starting instantly in -10 last few mornings on first crank with only one cycle of the glow plugs. So hopefully I'll be able to convince it to start in calgary for the next couple weeks?

I'm going to bring along a battery charger and lots of extension cord, I think if I leave it on the 2A trickle charge overnight on cold nights that will keep the battery topped up and warm and increase my chances of getting going

RCFA is right on the money.

Keep the filter, drain 15w40 and toss in 6.5 liters of 0w30.

Aside from the block/oil pan heater, it's one of the best things for your 2.5 under -10 cel.

One thing to note is that it doesn't give the grade of the "synthetic Oil." From my experience that looks something like a 10W30 or even a 5W30. Even though this test is being done at -52 degrees, it is a very close comparison to what is happening at say -30 in your engine.

My local Napa only had the 605-3032 in stock so picked up that one yesterday. Thank you wookie & snelson for getting the part numbers. Now just need to get it into Kirkham to be installed and I am going to see about the 0W30 synthetic oil.

After sitting outside in the wind since Fri, I was able to start it with not too much effort yesterday afternoon and this morning. Tomorrow maybe a different story (-24).

I'll need some sort of solution.. the drive to calgary was good yesterday (despite seeing about 30 accidents along the way) but I parked outside overnight and now she won't start :(

charging the battery now to give it another try, but it looks like I'm stranded.

Pulled the fuel line and the primer on the filter pumped some out so I don't think the fuel is frozen (lots of additive in it) but it is real slow to crank over and won't fire. Clutch and shifter are very stiff too.

your oil is too thick.

There's only one solution, heat. you have to get some heat in to it. if you have a block heater, plug it in for a couple hours, if you don't... well, people have used all sorts of heat sources under their engines or in the engine compartment... simple ones include 100w light bulb in the engine compartment, more risky ones include camp stoves under the engine...

perhaps the "proper" solution would be a magnetic oil pan heater... not nearly as good as a block heater, but does do some good in a pinch.

hmm even jump starting didnt get it going.. cranked and cranked and no go. Little puffs of black smoke from the exhaust, but very little. I'm going to try and figure out how possible/expensive it will be to tow it somewhere warm to thaw it out and figure out the problem. Could be the fuel.. although I was able to pump a bit of it, it was very syrupy. Could be the glowplugs. And yes the oil is too thick. As soon as it is running I'll change it to syth 0w30 or similar.

I'm in Mayland Heights if you have any advice for a garage or something. Thanks!

do you have any form of heater on it? even a magnetic oil pan heater is something....
