Actually both the Montero (Pajero) and 4runner (Hilux) are very alike.

Similar frame/drivetrain build.

So similar, that you can actually swap transfer cases, transmission's and some suspension components.

They're both solid vehicles.

A few years ago I put an xcase np231 out of a Jeep Cherokee into our Montero (Pajero). Didn't have to mod much at all.

I think the most thing that stands out from the toyota is the adjustable suspension and the nice shock absorbing seats. I havnt had a jdm toyota and herd bad things about the 2l diesels. I could be wrong and the toyota's have these luxury options.

I picked up the paj in Sept from Vancouver. I havnt had any troubles other than trying to find brakes, rotors and a lower ball joint. She came with 86oookm and drives like a dream. She even started yesturday morning with -22 wind chill and with no block heater, it wasnt easy though. Block heater is a must.

minor nit-pick... cars aren't affected by wind-chill, wind-chill only affects warm-blooded creatures (like humans)
So it was probably only -16 as far as the Pajero was concerned... I expect my vehicles to start down to somewhere just bellow -20c (straight temperature) without any additional help, bellow that I'm ok if they want a block heater, though I prefer if they can get going on their own (even if they are very grumpy about it)

Wind chill will cool your engine, oil, fuel etc. down faster to the ambient temperature and it will also draw heat faster from the engine etc. at startup. Therefore, it will have sat for the coldest ambient temperatures for a longer period overnight and also will be relatively slower to warm-up the engine and air-heater.

I've noticed that some cars here use winter grills, apparently some trucks have internally operated louvres, which prevent the dissipation of hot air and the influx of cold air against the metal of the engine.

Actually, windchill will affect an engine, because it generates its own heat. The effect of windchill is that it will take longer for the engine to warm up - after its temperature rises above the ambient temperature - if there is a wind blowing on it. My point is that it will have no effect on the engine starting in the first place in the morning. at -16 with a wind chill of -22 the vehicle will start just as well as it would at -16 with no wind chill.

The only place wind chill makes a really noticeable difference is in how quickly the vehicle gets back down to ambient temperature after it has been running. eg, if it is -16 and calm, after your vehicle has been up to full temperature, it will probably keep some warmth for 4-6 hours afterwards to ease starting the next time, however if there is a strong wind, it may only keep that warmth for an hour or 2.
