so its in the process of being worked out.

he's taken the pump off, found the seals that are destroyed and has sent the whole thing away to be refitted.

as expected, the seals weren't as easy to find as he thought they would be, so it's taking a bit longer. he SAYS the pump and new seals are being run on the bench this weekend and it will all go back together on Monday.

dont worry - i'll be celebrating when we get back on the road - and you guys will be the first to know!

as least we found someone to stay with, although after a week i think they're as keen as we are for the van to be back on the road...

Apparently a few of the Aussies are having pump seal problems when using low sulphur fuel as there is a lack of lubrication to the seals,they use additives when they have to fill up with the low sulphur stuff.

I use an additive too, but also blend WVO with the diesel and am curious if this adds enough sulphur-like lubricant that I can forgo the commercial chemical additives? Thoughts...

So the latest word is we'll be ready to go tomorrow. The fuel pump should be installed this afternoon and with a bit of luck we can go and pick it up tomorrow morning.
Latest guess for pricing is $900 for the fuel pump rebuild and $400 for removal/installation. A bit steep, but this is LA, so I'm not that surprised.
So we're feeling a bit more optimistic today. I'll let you know if we actually get going tomorrow - we'll have 16 days to get back to Vancouver. It'll be very close to a 50,000km road trip!

900 for the rebuild is a good price.

400 for the removal/reinstall is a little high but what can you do.

Considering all things, 1,300 for a re&re IP is good. :M

Enjoy the trip back up. :-D

The name of the shop is "Diesel performance shops"...however it might be worthwhile looking around for something else if you find yourselves in our position. We've just about had enough of his "it will be ready tomorrow" promises.

So the fuel pump failed the bench test - it cut out at 4000rpm. We said the delica has never (and will never) rev to 4000rpm in normal operation so just put it on and let us go, but they said they couldn't let it go with a known defect and they'd look into it.

So we're still not going anywhere. Not good news with only 16 days left on our visas...

You can do the drive from la to vancouver in 2 days .............3 if you go slow !!! So getting back in time should not be a problem.
Hell, mardy could send you something overnight (hahaha........well if UPS or fed-ex doesn't screw you !! ). so we should have you back in time if you run into any issues ! good luck. !

B25 or 25% BIO is just fine for the lubricity issue.. i have a paper from John deere regarding thier old fuel pumps (standyne) that say b15 is the minimum for lubricity, but B25 is reccomended for lubricity.
After that the paper goes into all of the reasons not to use biodiesel and how JD will not warrinty bio use..

At the very least, you can have one of the parts dealers ship you a pump overnight/next day.

Drive is 22 hours to the border normal drive time including traffic non-stop. I've done it many times.

dont fret about your visas...
i doubt if anybody will ever see them. worst case scenario tell imigra about your trip to tijuana for an afternoon and how you got waived back over the border. bam new 6 month visa.

The injectioni pump is never tested at that rpm(4,000) on the test bench. We test and adjust full load settings and cut off at around 2,200 rpms. And for starters, what did they say the cause or problem was for fuel starvation?

The story we got from the garage (who sub-contracted the pump rebuild to someone else) said it was the pickup pump, NOT the injector pump that was the problem. all the information I have is either 2nd or 3rd hand so it may not be very accurate, but they told us the injection pump was in reasonable condition, it was the pickup pump that failed. I'm not sure why, but it sounds like a fresh set of seals did the trick. I don't really know how these pumps work or I would have asked a few more questions...

I'll post more when we get the van back - should be here in about 2 hours (assuming it makes the 1.5 hour journey back here without any problems). Last time I talked to him he said it was running and he was just adjusting the idle. My friend drew the short straw and had to go pick it up, so we'll find out more when she gets back. She's a mechanical engineer too - she's just and interested in finding out what happened as I am.


And the visas aren't too much of a problem, we've just had to reduce our 3.5 weeks for this section to 15 days, and the insurance for the delica runs out on the 4th of Dec, so we have to back in BC by then.

She'll be right mate.
