patty, the glow plugs heat the combustion chamber. they are screwed right in to the cylinder. if you look at your engine, you will see a flat metal rail connecting the four plugs, and the rail is attached the the ends of the plugs with nuts. you can attach a 12v test light to them and turn the key to the on position when the engine is cold. youll likely only see 12v power for the few seconds between the "cliks" of the ecu
Re: help..glowplugs won't work anymore!!
just thought I'd add that my glowplugs stopped working the other day, volt tested the plugs and relay and got nothing, pulled the ECU and it looked fine, took the circuitboard right off and it looked okay until I noticed a bit of corrosion on the leads on the bottom.
Tested them and confirmed one path was broken, bypassed it with a wire and it is all fixed! cleaned it up and sealed it all with silicone.
Took pics of the whole process, posted here http://www.flickr.com/photos/coaxial/se ... 71/detail/

Glad to know it can be the ECU. Now, in my case, First Clic OK but NO Second Clic. So, tight the Battery Poles, in my case, bolts over the + Positive pole and the pole itself. Turn out to be enough :)
