What are you towing?

Post by kootenaydeli »

First off....I'm still dreaming of my future Delica...scheming if you will.

Just curious what people are pulling behind their Delicas. I live in the heart of the West Kooetenays. There are no flats, its up or down. I want to be safely capable of pulling a big snowmobile on a single sled tilt trailer. I will be fabbing the trailer so do I throw on a tongue brake (or electric)? How much holdback will I get out of the automatic? I guess I just don't want to look out and see me sled/trailer passing me on a descent. If I had to estimate, the fully gassed sled and trailer will be near 1000 pounds.

Any experience would be appreciated.

1000lbs? No problemo. We have an automatic tranny and tow our gardening utility trailer, with no brakes but the delica's, around everyday. True, it's seldom really heavy, but we have for sure hauled 1500lbs easy. This is a topic that has been disscussed before - try doing a search to find the threads that address it :M :-D

I would agree with konadog, but would try to keep your weight around the half-a-tonne mark. And watch your temperature gauge. I took a trip through southern BC this summer, and the engine temp needle got awful close to the red part, and that was just towing a little utility trailer filled with luggage and camping gear. Of course, we were driving up Kootenay Pass!

On the level these would pull a tonne easy, it's the hills that are the tricky bits.

My boss has been pulling a 6x10 enclosed trailer for a while now. Sometimes I bet it gets to around 3000 lbs, the max for trailer and payload is 3500...

Honestly it doesn't seem like it has to work that hard. Time will tell but it seems to be doing well around town.

Works for work.

We pull it up some steep hills into Coquitlam without much trouble as long as you aren't trying to race!

The trailer has no brakes, but we just upgraded the Delica's front brakes to the bigger next generation calipers and we're thinking about brakes on the trailer - electric would be nice but we wouldn't ever be able to do salt water, which isn't that big of a deal for us.

No sled but 1200+ tent trailer with family of 5 plus all the camping gear. I'll be doing the mountains this summer with it all. I'm guessing I'll be down to 80Km's on the steepest grades but I have had no issues here in the praires. I will be putting on an anti-sway bar on as I find over 95 the trailer wants to start dancing.
