Oil barrels

Where do you guys get them from? Can't seem to find anything in the yellow pages and google doesn't come up with anything relevent, ebay even draws a blank for local results.

I figure I am going to go with the one steel barrel, one plastic barrel set up. Any clues where to look?

Howdy again. Personally I'd recommend plastic barrels, 250 liter blue cider barrels or 1000 liter aluminum caged containers. Mostly a metal barrel should be fine, the reaction between the fatty acids and bare metal surfaces is minimal.

Feed stores and re cyclers, locally seem to be common sources for blue barrels (~$20) and 1000l cubes (~$100-$150). Maybe someone where you are could recommend a supplier.

ditto bcdelica about plastic barrels. i got a steel barrel for the heating part. it came from a bulk oil plant (that would be in the yellow pages!) it was a grease barrel and it was lined with a plastic bag so it was clean as a whistle when i got it. it was $50. it has a resealable lid too!

I got all my barrels from craigslist. I paid $15 each with lockable lid. It's hit and miss but then the price is right!

Ha ha, thats funny After Oil. I have always looked at everyone else's location to see if they were local and always tisked if they didn't input it, then you point out that I didn't update mine! Thanks for pointing it out, probably never would have noticed.

Back to topic. I had thought of getting two plastic ones as well, but want to cover my bases for things like heating it up in the winter, and for the future when I most likely will expand on my current basic plan (the two drum system from the plantdrive site) and need to heat it up for passing through a pump and filter. BCDelica, howdy back at ya . Thanks for the blue barrel idea, much simpler that I was looking at. As an offshoot, could you just use one of those critter proof garbage cans, or does it have to be a certain kind of plastic? Can't imagine it would have to be that special with the flimsy plastic cubes they come in.

Metal barrel with a plastic lining is exactly what I'm looking for After Oil, that would make the clean up a snap and $50, perfect. I never thought to look under "bulk oil plant" in the yellow pages as I don't even know what that is, sorry if you need to spell it out a bit more clearly for me, but I can't find anything like that.

David, hope you had/are having a good trip. I didn't find anything on craigslist, but quite honestly I would like a new one just for peace of mind that I'm not going to leak out 55 gals of oil while I sleep.

Well, i'll keep searching I guess. It shouldn't be that hard, they get used for garbage cans everywhere.... hmmmm

Well please pass it on if anyone has a contact, web site, or phone number for a place that I can buy a 55 gal metal drum.

the bulk oil plant is the place where people who use large volumes of fuel, like a municipality, or logging company get their fuel. they also sell barrels of lubes and solvents to repair shops and retailers. perhaps ask at stores that sell barrels of lubricants and whatnot where they get theirs.

Another good source is U-Brew wine places. I'll got two from there and they are coated so that the bulk grape juice concentrate doesn't react with the barrel. Open top barrels, very nice for heating in. For closed top metal barrels Eric has been my best source. Thanks again Eric.

western drum in maple ridge. Just off River road near the ferry dock. $25 for an open top drum. They are a drum recycler so they sand blast and paint the barrels. Mine looks like new !! Bring cash !! They have hundreds !!
