my wife and I are on our first road trip. I bought the van 4 weeks ago. I have put on 6000km's troublr free. Now I have tranny problems.
91 super exceed, 26km's on it when purchased, I was told all fluids had been changed. I drove it to work for a few weeks putting 4000km's on it trouble free, I changed the oil prior to our trip and check other fuids including tranny and all wasy good (except the washer fluid, how do you top it up?). We drove through Vancouver to Pemberton up to kamloops. A few days in the interior. I thought I had noticed a few hard shifts fron 1 to 2 but I attributed it to pressing the pedal a bit hard and really thought nothing of it. Then yesterday through Allison pass the overdrive was acting up, shifting into overdrive at below 60km's and not shifting out of it into 3rd with the pedal pushed to the floor, no kick down. I then controlled the overdirve with the button on the shifter and figured it as an electrical problem. WRONG! This morning we left our campsite on Harrison lake several km's down a logging road, we started back to Harrison hot springs, on the way the tranny started to act up far worse then before. We had to pull over for a few logging trucks and when pulling ahead from a stop the van would shudder like crazy, some sort of clutch problem. I decided not to stop unless need at this point and kept on going. Then we came to some hills and the tranny started shifting at strange times, not fully engaging in 3rd I thought, max speed was 50km's. This was good enought to limp into town and call for help.
I checked the fluid which was full, slightly discoloured, not really burnt smelling and no metal flakes on it, mostly good news. My wife and I walked to visitor info to use the computer to get Mardis number, I did not realize how far from him we were but I need to talk to some one.
Thanks for your time and advice Mardis! was nice to get some pointers
I don't think my van had a proper trans service and Mardis and I are hoping my problem is a clogged filter, limiting hydrolic pressure as to effect the shifting and clutches. It is a bit of a long shot but we hope the service will get it going again. i am under warranty at this point. we have check into a nice resort here and hope to be up and running soon.
so the van has been towed to a local shop in Agassiz, they don't seem to scared to look at it which is nice, the shop is also affiliated with a locall trans shop. I also told them (thanks Mardis) that the trans is the same as 88 89 montero v6 4x4.
My original thought was a solenoid problem, Mardis hopes its a filter issue, any other takers out there or ideas?

hi, good you make it towards the local shop, also try the shipping cable it sometime loose, pls check it if the kick down cable is properlly attached not loose. this might help you.
try to do this step by step maybe its one of them.
i never have any problem with the transmission for so long. with this delica its just depend on how they used it in japan or maybe its just not a real mileage of your delica as you mention it has a low mileage when you got it. too many things could go wrong. if in case you still have problem. pls give me a call anytime & willgladly to help you.
Cheers;

Looks at the red kick down cable as well. The nuts may have come loose.

Check the rubber mounts on the transmission as well. If they are really shot the trans can jump around a fair bit and cause the shudder you are feeling, especially 1st to second gear change.

and the winner is!!!!
jfarsang!!! Congrats, your prize is in the mail.
kick down had come detatched at the throttle body. I am embarrased I did not notice it when I checked the fluids ( way to much on my mind right now, easily distracted. ). The shop I sent it to test drove it, confirmed my problem and consulted thier local trans shop. The trans shop said `common problem for that trans, needs valve boby service`` They phoned me back, $278 to tow to trans shop in Surrey from Agassiz, ouch! I then asked them to do the trans service anyways in hopes it would fix the problem. They phoned back and said it was fixed! yay!!! No need for rental car now, thank goodness, that would have been expensive. The found a loose kick down cable at the throttle body. I think both them and myself should have seen that earlier, I suspect they were a little embarrased about almost towing it for $300 and then on second inspection fixing it with a $.25 cotter pin. its all good now, my wife and I got 2 days at the Harrison Hot springs hotel and spa. Van drives slow and smoothly again.
