Rear speaker and EZ cup holder mods.

Post by MitSurfbishi »

After 4 months away from home working and surfing, I finally have the time to start doing the mods I've wanted to do since first buying My MitSurfbishi.
Can cross a few off the list after the last few days.
-Custom cup holders. Super easy Cambodian Tire window hung style, chopped flush-ish to top of shifter console, holes counter sunk, then screwed to each side. There's just enough room there for the seat to flip up without hitting them as well as knee clearance.

-Next I installed my XM radio and upgraded some speakers. 4" Alpines in the front dash......yup had to do the mirror/flashlight contortion maneuver on that damn ridiculous passenger one. WHY THE HELL didn't MMC just mount that one like the driver side!? Much horrible cursing ensued for sure!

- Then the Sound Stage bunk 4 inchers in the back had to go. I found some 4x6's on the clearance table @ Visions for $40. I decided after some deliberation to pull the old cloth off the Sound Stage covers, cut oval holes in them, sand off the old glue, spray them gloss black, pilot the screw holes, and mount them on the face of the covers.

If you have ever pulled these covers off you know there are spring like clips that click into holes in a steel bracket. I managed to cut my ovals just so that one of the clips was salvaged and was able to anchor the unscrewed side down.
If you want bigger speakers in this spot you will have to grind away some of the steel bracket that used to hold the stock ones. I had to grind out a section to give enough clearance for the magnet and connector tabs(Sorry didn't have my camera with me when it was all apart).
- The other rear speakers can wait til I decide on a new deck to go with my amp and sub box. I may be pulling out the rear slave unit(that works) and mounting my amp in that slot...we'll see.
Til next update.....

I really like the rear speaker upgrade. Been wanting to do something to mine because I can hear the paper cones have all deteriorated (lots of 'rasping'). Nice idea! 8-)

Hey there....
How do the front alpine 4" speakers sound ? I have fount these in the states for $50 and i was thinking of putting them in as well.
The rear speaker install is great looking !! good job. :-D

Where the heck can we put an amp ??!!! As i found out on this trip i just took to california .......THe engine hump gets really hot when you are driving 8 hours a day and it is 40c outside. I think it would lead to amp clipping due to high temps. I used to run into this when it was mounted under my driver seat in my honda. I have been tearing my hair out trying to find a good mounting place for it..

If you are gonna take the time to swap out the front speakers, I suggest spending the dough on very good 4 inchers(that passenger side speaker really is a challenge, you only want to do this ONCE!!). I put in the Alpine "R" series. They sounded the best of all the others I listened to.

I've thought of mounting my amp to the side of my hot/cold box, or if you don't have one just to the front of the shifter console. Then if it were super hot out the A/C would cool it down. I'm not sure yet where it will go, probably hidden in the back wall panel where the rear slave unit is. I'll keep ya posted.

I've thought of putting it back there as well: there is quite a bit of room in that space, once one gets rid of the 'karaoke box'.

i was just about to install some 5 1/4" speakers in the rear sides when i remembered about this.
are those speaker boxes that are mounted above the back door stock in some delicas?
im going to mexico,
if i mount the rear speakers in the side panels, i might not be able to hear them because a bed will be in the way
EDIT:
**never mind i found the info with a search!!****

Those 'extra' speakers above the rear gate are part of the audio package which includes the karaoke controller.
