First in Montreal?

Post by JerBull »

Hi there all,

I This summer I picked out a 1991 gray over black exceed with crystal-lite roof and 76K on the clock, brought it in to canada with Karim at Silk Road in Surrey BC whist I worked my seasonal job (camp cook) all over Rural BC. By July I was driving it back east to Montreal, where I live. I am really pleased with the vehicle I ended up with, she drives like a champ, gets OK mileage (roughly 10.5-11L/100KMs) and is in top shape, mechanically. I decided to go for a vehicle that was in better shape under the hood (or passenger seat) than on the outside, so she has some patches of rust on the roof and the bush bars, as well as a few minor scraps and one dent, but otherwise the body is very clean, no body rust and she looks very fetching.

Driving across the country was a real treat and the perfect way to break her in. Had no problems what so ever, and had a real chance to get used to how it drives. Delicas are a real novelty anywhere east of Alberta so we turned a lot of heads. I was hoping to be the first Delica in Montreal, and may well be, but friends tell me they have spotted others here and there, just not sure if they actually live here. Most of the time I get gawked at when I drive by. Now I know what it's like having big boobs!

I had a hell of a time getting the vehicle registered once I was here in Quebec. I will try to detail my experience in the registration section at some point, but in the mean time if anyone wants some advice on registration in Quebec, feel free to email me. Suffice to say it took a couple of weeks of running around to get the job done, and they claim they had to add a new entry in to the vehicle registration database for me, which seems odd seeing as how there already seems to be a few somewhere else in Quebec!? They also tried to charge me QST, but I managed to obtain an exemption.

I did have a positive with Karim at Silk Road autos. Although the process was a bit loosey Goosey, and they are not as mechanically oriented as some of the more prominent dealers, he gave me very attentive service, is scrupulously honest and gave me a very good deal. Thousands less that what i would have paid at most other dealerships. Very nice guys.

I intend to drive the van on biodeisel as much as possible. I have not changed my fuel lines ect, but intend to do all of that very soon. I have sourced a guy on the south shore who sells homebrew made from wvo for $1/L. I will try it out soon. I will also do a WVO conversion on it when I can afford it, and have found a deisel mechaic who will install it.

Anyhow, thats me.

You... didn't... get an augmentation did you? Pec implants?

Okay, but seriously, welcome to the group. Yes, the drive across Canada can be quite wonderful (done it from side-to-side four times now). Montreal, eh? After BC, why there? Or is that where you're from? Well, bon chance with the veggie oil... (biodiesel has been chemically altered); and if you're looking for a kit, try PlantDrive (excellent reviews, couple of installs).

Welcome to the club. I agree with the PlantDrive WVO kit suggestion. I can't imagine driving on pure diesel anymore, nothing like the thrill of 4x4ing on an almost free carbon neutral fuel.

Great timing with your post.

I just bought a '93 SuperExceed for my brother in Montreal. He's coming to pick it up at the end of the month and driving it back home. He's been asking me about registration so glad you've been through it. I'll send you a email directly.

Welcome to this forum!

Hi Jeremiah,
My cousin bought his Mitsubishi Strada from Karim one week before you picked up your Delica.
I was with him.We also do the ride from B.C. to Québec. It's really a great trip.Wonderful.
I think i saw your Delica on the web site of Karim,Silk Road Autos,on the sold section.
I was surprised to see an other vehicle sold to Québec.

Congratulations,

Jean.

I should give a little more credit to Karim and Abdul at Silk Road in my story. I was under some pretty serious time constraints and he was supportive, down right positive through the entire process. They really did prepare my van well, It just ran so smooth as soon as I got it from them and I breezed across canada without so much as a hiccup. Even afterwards when I went through my Quebec Registration The Inspection Mechanic commented on how tight my Deli looked under the hood (seat)! I was probably a pretty difficult sale for him and he really came through for me. He is just so laid back it is easy to loose sight of how tricky a process it is and how professional he was; it was nice buying a used car without feeling like there was a salesman breathing down your neck. I got the impression from other dealers that I visited that they were mainly interested in the Mechanical side of the process, Whereas Karim was more service oriented which is what attracted me to him in the first place, but actually they were very thorough when going over my vehicle. I have had zero issues even since putting it through very heavy driving, It still just hums. Just so no one gets the wrong Idea about Silk Road from my previous post, Recommended.

Nice to hear!

Do you know if your timing belt and balancers were changed. It's often overlooked by dealers as it's pricey ($800 or so) and the van will still run fine even if it's not done. Problem is these van often have less than 100 000km so people decide to wait until it reach the 100 000km but what they forget is that these vans are usually 15-17yrs old and often never had their timing belt changed while it should be done every 5yrs. Would just hate to see your timing belt go, then it's big $$$...

Glad you're enjoying your van and haven't had a problem.

Cheers,
David

Yeah, well thats the thing. He actually did quite a bit of preventative maintenance on my vehicle. The timing belts changed (all belts by the looks of things), tentioners, seals, all fluids, filters, brakes and tires. That's why I re posted, he seems to get a bad rap on this site and I didn't want to add to that because he, or more specifically his mechanic Abdul, who seems very sharp, is very thorough. Oh and did I mention that I paid Less than 8grand? Props.
