I had a set of 31's on my Jeep a few years ago.
I liked them but they wore down very fast on pavement. The compound is very soft.
That said, the best MT I have used and I tried out a lot.
Just the short life and high price was not worth another set.
$600 for 5 practically new one's is a killer deal.
Just make sure the 'practically new' is really 'practically new'.
Just by looking at them, it's hard to tell. At least on the first 10,000km on mine. But the traction went down fast.
You'll need at least 15x7 rims or better, 15x8.
They look aggressive and are really nice to drive on/off road, but they wear at least twice as fast as an average MT and cup easily if not rotated properly.

15x7 or 15x8?
I know the 8" rim offer a better fit for the 31 but would the 7" rim only draw back would be to increase the wear on the tire? I have both available, prefer the look of the 7" but not sure if I'm ready to compromise the function over the look... suggestions?

David
15x7's are fine for 31x10.5's. It's what 80% of toyota/jeep owners use.
The difference between the crown/rubber meets the road between 15x7 and 15x8 is very small.
If I had a choice and preferred the 15x7's, I would choose the 15x7's.
Will depend on the backspacing as well.
I have 15x8 with 3.75" backspacing which pushes the whole rim/tire outwards a touch too much.
15x8 with 4-4.25" backspacing is perfect for the Delica.
15x7 with 3.75 - 4 " of backspacing is perfect as well.

thanks folks. im gonna ride this out a little while and see if the price comes down even more. i guess there are some drawbacks. i do plenty of off-roading but also at least 1200km hwy in a month. apparently the tires are loud too.

ALL mud tires make some noise
With that said, if I were in the market for some tires and 5 MTR's came up in excellent cond for $500-600, I would be all over it.

i live on the hwy here in powell river. i can ususally tell when a 4x4 monter truck is coming. i can hear the tires long before the vehicle passes my place.jfarsang wrote:ALL mud tires make some noise![]()

If you do 30% or more off-roading, get the MTR's.
If you do less than 10-20 % offroading a month, get some All Terrain's.
The noise does bother me with mud's. Especially on Delica's since you're basically sitting right on top of the front tires.
Personal preference.
Most of the people I know who have mudders, actually use them off road once or twice a year and buy them for looks.
Noise and lower wet/road traction prevent me from buying a set over good AT's.

In my experience with M/T tires they wear quickly, they are loud, expensive and usually overrated, unless you are doing SERIOUS 4x4ing that requires airing down you tires(rock climbs, deep mud) all terrain tires are more than capable, plus they are usually cheaper and they last longer, as well M/T tires are terrible in snow. they do look cool tho.
just as an example a few of my 4x4 buddies and I went for a fall 4x4 up in the greystokes plateau near kelowna, we had 2 1st gen blazers, 3 toyotas, and a lifted nissan pathfinder (all lifted with M/T's and at least 33'' tires) we ran into a guy with a 1991 4RUNNER with 31'' A/T on the trail with a small body lift, he wanted to tag along so we agreed as the day progressed we started to get into some SERIOUS 4x4ing some of the toughest terrain Ive seen, long story short at the end of the day there was myself , one blazer and the 4Runner at the top of a rock climb I didn't think ANY of us would make it up, let alone a pretty much stock 4RUNNER with 31'' A/T tires. so the next set of tires I get for my delica will be some BF goodies 31'' A/T, as well i have heard that in deep snow A/T tires perform better than winters, i cant vouch for this but i wouldnt be suprised

that part is correct, but where A/T tires fall down is in the ice department, winter tires will always beat A/T tires on ice. (an in reality, the difficulty with most winter driving isn't the snow, but the ice)as well i have heard that in deep snow A/T tires perform better than winters

i do plenty of offroading, maybe not 20% of my 1500km in a month. but i do need access to back country roads and trails for trails and bushwacks to remote mountain tops.jfarsang wrote:If you do 30% or more off-roading, get the MTR's.

that being said id probably be fine with ATs, but i wonder if the price of the MTs makes them economically better then buying brand new ATs...

It does. I would buy them (5) at $600 if there were 90+ %after oil wrote:

I've run through three sets of wrangler MT's with two sets being the MT/R...always loved them...wore great for me and 98% of my driving was on pavement...awesome offroad...
Personally I would highly recommend these tires for anyone wanting to do a lot of off pavement.
I have run plenty of BFG (thats what I have now on my Nissan Safari) and also run Yoko MTs on my IHC Scout II offroader...but would still love to be on Wrangler MT/R's on all my wheels.
