Full roof length cargo racks?

Post by byariver »

Hi guys and gals,
Does anybody have full length cargo racks on their vans? Ones long enough to get a roof box on aswell. Have seen lots of good ones on 4wd's about, do any cross over to delicas (with or without a little bending)?Would like to mount to the gutter, and not have to get racks as well. Has anyone come across any in their travels? Thanks in advance.

its starting to sound like i work for surco in this thread, but I just know a bit about them. They make one that is 100 inches long however the width may be an issue there because those are extra wide.

here are the dimensions of all their racks, and product numbers because thats where I copied and pasted it from

Product Numbers
S4050 - 40" x 50"
S4550 - 45" x 50"
S5050 - 50" x 50"
S4060 - 40" x 60"
S4560 - 45" x 60"
S5060 - 50" x 60"
S5072 - 50" x 72"
S5084 - 50" x 84"
S6572 - 65" x 72"
S65100 - 65" x 100"
S8036 - 80" x 36"
S8072 - 80" x 72"
S80100 - 80" x 100"

Safari rack

Post by Thomas Porter »

My new safari rack is nearing completion.
It is constructed from 1 inch aluminum tubing, 100 wall thickness-06 tensile (bendable).
The unit is 52x52, sits one inch off my roof and is strong enough for a 200lb man to take photographs from.
The drip rail grabs are stainless and the uprights are 1/8 steel plate, 4"x16" to clear the highroof.
Will be painting the uprights white and polishing all the aluminum.
My welders finished this in a day.
Anyone want one? I paid the big bill for the prototype, the subsequent ones will be cheaper than I paid.
A lot stronger than a commercially available one too.
I will measure and weigh it to see how much it will be to ship one from SK.
Cheers,
Thomas

Hey Bruce I showed you a picture of a Delica coming that had a full length rack on it and you were trying to work out whether it was two racks . It is one big rack front to rear with a separate light bar at the front . How the hell do I post pictures . Sorry i`m just not that bright you know !!! Give me a Delica - no problem , give me a computer and I become mentally challenged !!!!

Thomas,
nice looking rack!!
curious, why did you go with steel legs and aluminum tub? you will end up with inter-reaction between the 2 different metals, may i suggest aluminum legs for the future sales?

Racks

Post by Thomas Porter »

Well aware. Due to the different polarities between the two metal, the aluminum will corrode if not properly insluated from the steel.
Will be using rubberized undercoating on the inside of the uprights to addres this issue.
The uprights needed to be really strong, I'll be putting a photo blind on this rack to do shots of nesting birds from inside.
May look at doing the next one with 1/4 inch checkerplate for those who don't plan on standing on theirs.
Cheers,
Thomas

Ah, so, lets ask the others how high quality the surco rack I have is now. Honestly it held up to a ton of abuse, and the weakness was me not tightening things up before the trip. Its all fixed now better than before. Thanks for the roadside help again fellas. I will be getting a second surco rack for the front half, putting lights on it. I would like to findn a used one though, nothing on my van stays new for long thats for sure.

Nice looking rack Thomas, I have to start fabricating.
