What insurance companies will insure these things?

Post by Miloki »

I can't find any names in the forums. I know there are some out there, because I know there are Delis outside of BC, so where are you all getting your insurance? (broker or company)

Where are you??? It's not in your profile. Maybe somebody from your city could give you some help.

Sorry - Halifax, Nova Scotia

But I'm also an Alberta resident (I'm a student out here) so I can insure it at my permanent address there

Based on a mini survey I did with 3 more guys, the Calgary owners I know use different insurance companies. I use an insurance broker (can't remember the name) and they supposedly look for the best price around / companies that will sell insurance for the Deli. I have the basic insurance (not theft, collision, comprehensive) and this works ok for me. They told me if I wanted to get something better, I should get an appraisal of the van, but I don't think I need it to upgrade this for now.

I'm not sure how insurance works anywhere else.

I hope this helps...

Hi Val, In BC we have the mandatory government auto insurance ICBC. Everyone must have the basic insurance with them. Then you can add on your own optional coverages.

So, for us the Delica is only required to be registered in BC (which must meet Transport Canada safety requirements ie tires, battery, headlights, etc which is why we have to get a safety inspection before it is registered). Then ICBC will insure you (as long as you havent ripped off ICBC in the past.

For you, try going through smaller companies. Such as Credit Unions (not big banks) if they do insurance there. Smaller ones that advertise locally as "Caring And Concerned For You". Or ask a local broker. It pays to shop around (I saved about $400.00 annually).

Please ensure you get it in your proper residence area, cuz a claim can be denied even if you have paid the premiums, if they say you aren't residing in your insured area.

I recall yours had the advantage of having been fully registered in BC with a "Long Vin Number" in the North American format, rather than the short Japanese VIN. Yes?? Am I remembering the correct delica??

Cheers, Christine (Please Send me a PM to update on your delica purchase).

TD Canada trust insured my pajero in Calgary. Had no issue with the short vin number. Costs about 650.00 for a year full coverage except for glass.

As the general consensus appears to be that I do not know what I'm talking about, and cause more harm than good, I am removing this post so that others are not tricked in to following my ill-advised instructions.

Unfortunately, while TD is a national company, it has different procedures for Atlantic, Central, and Western Canada - and the Atlantic region TD won't insure the Delica.

Also - as I found with RBC insurance - Pajero's are easier to insure than Delica's, because they have a North American equivalent (the Dodge Raider, I believe). As no version of the Delica has ever been sold in North America, it's harder to insure.

I know there *are* companies that insure them out here, it's just a matter of finding them!

AMA will insure them, but CAA out here said no - but I have this sneaking suspicion buddy wasn't really looking, as he told me he didn't believe it was legal to operate a right hand drive vehicle in Canada!!! I tried to educate him, but it was useless, so I'll try phoning a different CAA office on Monday...

Oh, yeah, I made sure that I had a record of advising the insurance company where I was and what part of the year I was spending where... My ex-husband makes a disgusting amount of money defending insurance companies against claims, so I knew better than to mess around with that stuff!

Hey Val, it WAS imported into USA for 2 years. A gutless gas model with "normal" left hand drive. There is stuff about it on this website. I think it was like 1988 & 1989 ? The pictures i've seen are a beige model. Some chat about importing one to put onto a diesel chassis here, I recall. Maybe someone else remembers the model name ???? Cheers, Christine.
Christine
Of The TardisDeli My TardisDeli travels thru time and space. Our house is nicknamed the TardisDeli Motel, as so many delii owners visit to share delii stories.

Wow - if somebody could tell me that model name, I might have an easier time. I'll see if I can dig it up myself, I just don't recall ever seeing anything about that.

As my insurance saga continues, I thought I would post the following for anyone in the future that stumbles across this thread looking for info... (you people in BC & AB are very fortunate when it comes to insurance!)

What most insurance companies can find in their listings for the US version is the 1990 "Mitsubishi Wagon" LS or DS or whatever.

The Cooperators will insure these things (this from another Delica owner in NS who has his insured through the Cooperators). Dominion will also insure them (unfortunately, I have one at-fault accident in the past 6 years, so Dominion won't write a new policy for me). CAA does not insure them, but "will make an exception for existing customers" (but no, they are not interested in insuring it for me if I also switch my car, motorcycle, and house insurance over to them). I DID manage to get one quote so far - I don't even know what company it was, because it was through an agent, but if I go with them I'll post the name; however, I'm hoping the Cooperators can give me a better rate because compare: I have full coverage on my Jetta plus $2million liability (double the norm) for under $800/year, the quote I got for $1million liability only on the Delica was $2024/year. ACK!
