Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Hey guys, well I've made a deal in writing to buy a private BC Delica, and the plan is to have it shipped via searail from Delta BC to Calgary - and this is where I need some asistance.
The Delica has been registered and inspected in BC, so when it arrives in Calgary at searail, I need to know if the following steps are correct to get it registered in AB.
1. While the vehicle is in transit, I take the VIN # to my insurance broker to get insurance.
2. I take my insurance to registries office to get plates? **I won't have the actual title in my hand, it will be in the van in transit - can I evern register it without the title? Would a copy do?
3. I pick up the van, install the plates, then have it inspected for out of province within X number of days?
I think I'm missing something here - doesn't sound right to me.
Steve

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Hey, I'm going through the exact same thing here in edmonton.
What I did was I sold my old vehicle and took the plates from it and put them on the Deli. Legally doing that you have two weeks to get it inspected and officially registered.
I'm running into a few snags though. Apparently there were some new laws that came into effect in Jan 2008 which makes it almost impossible to pass out of province inspection for Jap Imports such as a Delica. I haven't had my actual inspection yet, but from the inspectors I've talked to, it looks like there are going to be all sorts of things they will throw at us. From what I heard, the third brake light in the back, reflectors on the sides, headlights, and now apparently the windshield and all the glass isn't compliant so that may all have to be changed. If this is the case I'm not sure if any new deli's will be coming to Alberta for awhile. Anyone have any better info?
The number to call to get some better info is 427-8901. They are inspection guys and can tell you what will need to be done. I'm calling tomorrow to get some more info.
I will let you know how it goes, please be in touch because we are sort of in the same boat.

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Hi M,
Yes all those items sound familiar to other postings on this site - not sure sure it's new as of 2008 though.
Here's what I know:
The headlights defintiely need to be changed if they're still the originals.
The new headlights once installed need to be set up as daytime running headlights (DRLs)
There's a how to in the Deli Wiki I believe on how to set up the existing side marker lights to be compliant (literally just a single wire to be soldered on each of the two lights).
I've heard the third break light is hit of miss as far as 'required', but if you have a 92 and up they should come with this already.
Your comment about the glass is what concerns me the most!? If alllll the glass has to be replaced that would be thousands I think....will definitely make a few calls here in cowtown to find out for sure.
Can any other members comment on the glass?

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Ya I just phones the folks at luxary imports in Calgary to get some facts and it doesn't look good. He said the Alberta Gov't/ MVA is basically trying to outlaw RHD vehicles in Alberta, despite the fact that they are not less safe than LHD and that the headlights and tail-lights are DIS approved and therefore the same as DOT or SAE. But his words to me were "hold onto your money until these ruling get overturned". Too late. Guess I should have done more homework.
The guy from LUXIm said that the latest thing they are going after is the tail-lights. Looks like they may need to be changed. Still not sure about the glass, haven't heard back yet from the fellow at the 427-8901. Hopefully he will have all the answers, but it is not looking so good right now. Eventually all these rulings will be overturned as soon as someone has the bullocks to go to court, but until then we may be in some trouble.
Keep me posted,

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Hey,
Just talked to BOB IRELAND and he was a really nice guy and gave us some good news and hope. He said that the only issue with the front headlights is if the beam is pointing into oncoming traffic.
However, he said if the headlights are e-coded (13) then they are GOOD TO GO!!
As well he said if they have no arrows, then they are fine. If they have a mix of single arrow and double headed arrow then you are good to go. The rear lights should be fine as long as they are e-coded (which mine are) and the glass should be fine as long as AS1 or AS2 which mine are as well. PHEW! Looks like the only thing is the third headlight in the rear and side reflectors, as well as DRL. He said if any inspector has any problems to call him and he will tell them the story. But don't spread any hear-say, just get the inspector to give him a call. His number is 780-427-6798. I would call him if I were you when your van arrives because then he has your side of the story.
Good luck!

Nice! That's good to hear. I just called ProActive here in Calgary, with my main concern about the replacing of all glass - they had never heard of this and said as long as the headlights are compliant, tires, etc. it should be no problem getting a BC Delica through the out of province inspection....especially if the Delica had already been registered in BC, which mine has.
Wheww...you had me freaking out there!

I hope for your sake that the glass thing is basically like what I heard goes on here in bc and that is if the glass isn't MMC glass it likely isn't to the right standards and has to be replaced.

Hey Loki, is there something to look for on the glass to determine that it's MMC - is there literally MMC markings on each pane?

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Ya mine was registered in BC too, but it looks like the headlights aren't compliant. No e-code! Darn. Hopefully my importer will cover it. I talked to some folks from this site on the phone (won't name any names), and they said if it was a private sale like mine was, that it is basically illegal to sell a non-compliant vehicle without giving the buyer that knowledge, and as a registered importer it is their business to know the condition of their vehicles. Hopefully they do the right thing.
Good luck, hopefully Alberta doesn't go too crazy in the clamp down.

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Has anyone had an out of province inspection done in Calgary recently (last couple of months)? My BC inspected Delica is arriving in a week or two and I'm wondering how strict they have been with recent inspections. Also, if anyone can recommend a place to get the inspection done that would be great.edmontowndeli wrote:

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Hey just thought I'd update here. I had no issues regarding OPI at Pro Active in NE Calgary. I needed new wipers as mine were all cracked. And they identified front wheel bearings were dry and needed re-packing - common issue apparently with these 92's. No issues with the glass whatsoever.
I had a fine experience with ProActive. The only issue I had was with a particular registries office near ProActive - the ditzy chick at the front desk said she couldn't find the deli in their computer as ever being registered in BC. Left - tried a registries here in the NW (Crowfoot) - done in 10 minutes.

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
My understanding of the whole RHD-issue in Alberta was that there was a couple of coincidentally-timed crashes - both RHD, both young drivers, both performance cars - which raised these vehicles to a degree of notoriety. Can anyone elaborate?
Or is it just the domestic market dealers who have their shorts in a bunch, same as here in BC? "We don't have those kinds of cars, with those kinds of options, to sell to you, so we don't like 'em. Waaaaaa. Why don't you like our cars? Why?"

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
Not sure if the above was corrected yet, but just to clarify. You do not get issued your plates until your OOP is successfuly completed. Prior to that you do have to take your proof of insurance to the registry agent and get the inspection requistion form that you have to give to the inspection facility. Prior to the OOP you operate the vehicle with either the old plate from your previous vehicle that was just sold, or with a transit sticker that costs something like $26.00 and is good for something like 6 days I think it is.1. While the vehicle is in transit, I take the VIN # to my insurance broker to get insurance.
2. I take my insurance to registries office to get plates? **I won't have the actual title in my hand, it will be in the van in transit - can I evern register it without the title? Would a copy do?

Re: Steps for registering BC Deli in Calgary
I was a bit worried about finding a good place for OOP in Edmonton. But I found a place that was good -- did not skip out on or ignore anything, found a few minor bugs to fix, and didn't give any rumors or BS about weird or misinterpreted OOP rules. If anyone in Edmonton is looking for a reliable OOP PM me and I'll pass on the name of the shop.
I went above and beyond the strict requirement anyway, for safety, installing bright new LED side markers and LED high brake light. Wired in a relay for DRL in the steering column, and got new headlights (my Deli is a P25V which takes domestic 6054 headlights, $11, that was nice!)
After seeing how well illuminated the van is compared to before, and some research about accident prevention from fast LED brake lights, I'm glad I did the extra work which amounted to about $50 and a day's work, with no experience ever working on anything automotive. Even if it never prevents an accident, every upgrade and repair I've done myself has taught me a bit more and in the long run it's a lot of money saved to DIY.
