How often should filters be replaced?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

How often should filters be replaced?

Post by Adrock »

I just replaced my air filter, at about 8-9000km since it was last changed. I was told to change all my filters at once (oil fuel and air) and around 5000km. Being on a 2000k road trip sort of put a damper on doing it as soon as I should have but its happening now. I picked up all 3 filters at once. In my manual though it says fuel filter should be replaced every 20 000 miles, as in 32 000 km. so should I just save the fuel filter (and a considerable amount of work) and not change it right now?

I know I should have done oil a while ago but it is what it is and i'm getting to it asap.

If you have any tips on changing the oil or fuel filter please feel free the throw them my way. I've only ever worked on my motorcycle before so the whole car thing is new to me.

Thanks

max overdrive, same place I got my van in Richmond. $55 for all 3 altogether. He made a thread for them in the parts section.

I don't know about the quality, the brand is 'advantage' on all 3. All I know is i needed filters and he has them.

filtration

I don't believe you will gain much by changing your fuel filter more often than the 30k interval. It is a big separator/ filter, and as recommended by the manufacturer, can be drained when the indicator shows water in the fuel.

Every time you change the fuel filter you risk contaminating the system with dirt etc. If you are able to, always buy your fuel from the same source and fuel up at the end of the day to reduce condensation in your tank

I'm using the Napa3128. It is made by WIX and is rated at 10 microns.

I intend to install a primary filter on the suction side of the system and change it at the reccomended interval, thereby extending the service life of the relatively expensive separator element. This should work as long as I don't install any fittings or components that will restrict the flow.

The air intake is location is less than ideal for travel on dusty roads.
If you do a good deal of this type of driving your air filter will plug up pretty quick. It is money well spent to install a snorkel and air intake restriction guage. The nice thing about a guage is it will let you know when you need to service the intake, as opposed to you guessing when the filter should be replaced.

I'm using a K&N 3001 oil filter. It has an anti drain back valve which helps save wear on the turbo and top end.

I get my air filters from John Deere

I buy most of my stuff from Napa but..................... for those who don't know, places like Napa and Lordco etc have at least three different prices for everything; The "good guy" price, The "average" price, and the "Bend over" price . Let these guys know you are comparison shopping and always ask them for the "best price" they can give you.

If your lucky you can find a parts guy who is willing to do some leg work and find quality parts at competative prices. If you are fortunate enough to find a guy like this AlWAYS ask to deal with him. All too often the other guy at the counter can't be bothered to pick up the phone if he doesn't see what you need on his computer screen or in his book.

you can get a baldwin LFP805 oil filter with an anti drain back valve in it for pretty cheap, napa has one that fits as well which is made by wick, just call them and cross ref the # i gave you for baldwin, i know that my air filter was replaced when i got the van and it was replaced by a fram filter, can't find the piece of paper i had with the part # for it but i remember being told that they are easy to find, try glenn at coombs country autos on the island, he has a lot of parts and filters in stock, i'm sure that he wouldn't mind giving you the parts # and where to get them, he deals with lordco... cheers!
