Faulty stereo?

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Faulty stereo?

Post by Caca »

Hi everyone,

I just got my white 92 Crystal Lite Top Delica today, and am having a blast driving it around! Unfortunately, the stereo doesn't work. Only thing it does it light up the buttons when I turn on the headlights. Nothing happens when I press the power switch. I was just wondering if those buttons light up because of me turning on my headlights meaning that those buttons are connected directly to the headlights/dash relay? Or is it just something wrong with maybe the power button as I can't seem to turn it on? or?

Ideas anyone?

I don't know a lot about the standard stereo system because I ditched it on the first day I bought the vehicle (and replaced it with something more apt for my needs), but the illumination is worked from a wire that senses when you turn your lights on, so will not affect the function of the unit.

The things I would check (in logical order) are:

Fuses? (above the gas pedal....top row, fourth from left)
Wiring? Remove the stereo and check all the wiring to the back to make sure not of it has been cut/modified by a previous owner? (like me, the original owner may have fitted a different stereo then re-installed the original unit when the vehicle was sold)
Connections? If all the wiring apprears to be in order, use a test/multi-meter to check that 12V and switched 12V is entering the unit?

If that all seems OK then I would suspect you may have a faulty unit?

I sold my original unit to another Delica owner and he said it packed up within a month of fitting it. When he opened up the case and did some stripping down, it turned out to be a faulty earth wire inside the unit. If you reckon the unit is at fault, how confident are you at stripping one down??

Personally I would say: ditch the original unit and treat yourself to a nice modern one and stick a spare 'tray' under it to fill the gap. I bought a nice Sony unit recently for the Mud Monkey which plays all my music from my cell phone via bluetooth...and also acts as a 'hands free' so I can leave my phone in my pocket, yet still play all my music AND use the phone!! All for $150.

Nice~ I'm checking into my friends shop to get a harness for a JVC face plate deck that my gf had from her previous car... I was considering just buying a single din with a box at the bottom to fit it in and the harness, and then can just use my gal's deck... if not, just any deck would work for me, since I listen only to my Ipod on an FM transmitter anyways, so I don't really need a super nice deck. (although my gal's old deck is pretty good~ no MP3, but at least CD!! woot... hehe)

Either way, thanks AGAIN Mystery Machine~ now that I know that the lighting of the unit isn't relative to the deck, I'm not gonna even try, it's probably dead anyways. When I have time, maybe I'll take it apart and see what I can screw around with in there~

Cheers!!!

also, a bit of an obvious I guess....but check if you have speakers!:)
Mine came with no speakers front and back, and the middle ones were disconnected at the speaker end.
So it took a few very confused moments to figure out why the stereo seems hooked up correctly, but there is no sound..

That's what I'll be looking at when I get a harness from somewhere (dunno where yet, saw another post that some old Ford? or something the rather had a harness that fit... I'll have to look into it further). I called up some friends to check it out for me since they've done a few Deli's before. I already have 2 spare speakers stacked away IN CASE I don't have any... hehehe... Hope I can get all this done before the weekend for my trip to Sun Peaks, otherwise, I'll have to find some old Getoblaster (sp?) and plug it into the cig lighter... hehehehe

Thanks for the concern tho~ hehehe... my gf and I thought of that as soon as we jumped in the car:

me: stereo seems dead
gf: won't work?
me: nah... dun even know if there's speakers or if they work or not...
gf: I have a spare set at home, let's get that just in case~~
