Recommendations for mechanic in Denver, CO
Hi there. Brand newbie here. We just purchased a 1990 L300 this week and are driving it across the country. Having a problem getting the automatic transmission to go into 4th. I know this is a Canadian based group but I was hoping someone on here might know a mechanic with Delica experience in Denver, CO as we are passing through there tomorrow. Any help appreciated. Thanks y'all.

Hi Aperiso...
Sorry to hear about your problem. It will be a challenge to find Delica specific mechanics in US as there are not that many Delica's around. Although the number is growing but for time being it certainly will be a challenge. You could try finding shops that work on Pajero's. From my understanding Delica's have some similarities to the pajeros that were imported into US way back when. The engine is also similar to Mitsubishi Mighty Max or the Dodge Ram 50 which were also in US way back when; not sure about transmission. In your case you might get lucky going to a transmission shop. Or some of the senior members might be able to provide some feedback.
Only shop I know of that work on Delica's specifically is in Philadelphia, Mendel's garage.
There is a delica owner in Steamboat Springs, CO you might want to reach out to. They might be able to recommend a place. Relevant information on a map where a few of us US owners have added our name to. Link below. Feel free to add yourself and best of luck.

btw. I don't know if the overdrive button will prevent the transmission to shift to 4th gear but just in case it should be "depressed" for the overdrive to function properly. its a long shot and might not be your issue but thought to mention it just in case

Thanks for the info Furi! I'll add myself to the map of owners. Looking forward to building a knowledge base and community amongst the fellow Delica owners. Happy New Year!

Welcome aperiso. Lots of good folks and tons of info on this site.
Good to see a marker on the west coast/sf; my home before moving to NY.
It seems you have done the impossible. Have you registered your deli in california?

Did you resolve your "wont shift into 4th" issue? It's usually something simple.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Yikes I hope you don't mean you're working on registration in California. Let's see a picture of the new rig I just imported mine from BC to Arizona.apersio wrote:Just got it into California. Currently working on the registration.

And what was the issue with the 4th gear? Did you find a good mechanic in the area?
You need to drive your deli up and down Haight St. at least a few times a week to give the dwellers there some hope :)

Hi Apersio and all. I too am new to the forum. I bought an L300 a month ago and drove it down from Vancouver to Lake Tahoe without stopping, and no issues. Since then I've developed the same problem with it not shifting into 4th gear until it is good and warmed up...at least 20-30 miles. I've checked with mechanics in the greater Tahoe, Reno, Carson City area and so far nobody wants to touch it. A mechanic at AAMCO Transmissions called it "morning sickness" and suggested changing the coolant temp sensor or engine thermostat, that may control when it shifts into 4th. Have you had any luck in solving thd problem with yours? Thanks.

Hi Snomad74. Sorry for the slow response. I haven't been on the forum in awhile. Anyway, that sounds like a very similar problem to ours, which we did get fixed. At first we tried the coolant temp sensor and that did not help in our case. It's relatively cheap so makes for an easy check. The problem ended up being with the overdrive solenoid. Once we replaced the solenoid it worked like a champ! Good luck getting the issue solved.

Hi Apersio. I haven't checked back in on the forum in a long time and just realized you sent a response....very much appreciated. Glad to hear you solved your AT issue after changing the OD solenoid. I still haven't had the time to resolve mine, but I plan on taking the same steps as you. Did you find a mechanic in the Bay Area that works on JDMs? If so, I'd really appreciate their contact info whenever you get a chance. Thanks again in advance.
