Hi there,
I'm in the process of importing 2nd Gen L400 "Jasper" with a High Roof, no sun roof, from Tokyo. Hope to see it by late October. Our plans are for it to be our third line low use vehicle (my first vehicle is a Salsa Wolverine with mechanical disks and a Shimano Alfine 11) with camping capabilities. We have done various types of camping in the past including backpacking, car camping, canoe tripping and sailing (Catalina 30, long gone). I'm hopeing to explore forestry roads, BC hydro campsites etc but the reality is I will be doing mostly highway miles.
I'm considering BFG ATs KO2 30" tires on stock suspension, no lift with possible shock upgrade, which may be needed anyway. Bilstein? Rancho adjustable? Overkill? I hope to keep the engine as stock, reliable and clean as possible. Highway speeds at 90km/h or 55mph. (My car is a VW with 2.0 TDI! Very mad at VW right now.)
For camping I plan on building something akin to the ququq box using flight case technology for light weight and strength. As well, rhino racks with a foxwing awning.
That's all for now. Hope to see you all out on the trails. Any feed back is welcome and of course I'm scouring the tech parts of the site. Interestingly, none of our uses of our vehicles is exactly the same is it?

Welcome to Delica Canada, Psych :M

Diesel is one of the cleanest fuels out there, one of the reasons Europe is predominately diesel. People see soot coming out of the local bus and think "Oh my God - it's pollution" because it's a blackish cloud that hangs a little in the air until it cools, then it falls to the ground. It's not clean like dirt, it's dirty. Gasoline on the other hand is not an oil like diesel is, it's a solvent. It's pollution is much clearer and lighter than air, floating upward into the heavens... The thing about VW is not that their vehicles are pollution monsters, hell ~ guy I know took a drive to Calgary in his Jetta TDI on one tank of fuel. That is AWESOME. The thing about VW is they lied. Much like the Clinton-Lewinsky affair ~ who cares if the president gets a little nookie on the side (maybe his wife), it's that he lied.

Oh dear, did I just type that out loud? I guess I can't ever run for the Grits.

Don't get me wrong ~ lock yourself into a sealed garage with a running diesel and you'll succumb ~ just better for the planet over gasoline. You can also use alternate fuels with a diesel engine.

I use Rancho RS 9000 shocks, really like them. Got the Bluetooth controller so I can change settings on the fly. Wicked.

As you become more familiar with DC you will get more input of ideas, which is why I'm here. You won't agree with every opinion out there but it certainly provides food for thought.

Happy trails!

Falco.

Hi Carl, I picked them up at North Shore Off Road in North Van, just off of Mountain Highway, south of Main Street, toward the docks.

well.. its kinda clean.. problem with diesel soot is it creates acid rain.. hence new vehicles have DPF systems.. not that DPF really works either.
