spacegear backup camera
Broke the rear hatch mirror a few years ago....really hated the thing too! Started looking at the triangular plastic cover and wondered how much space was in that cavity and if a backup camera would fit. After some guess-timation it turns out there is enough space.
After some ebay searches I found a rear view mirror with built in LCD screen and then I bought 2 different cameras...both with IR so they can see at night. One camera was too big for the cover...I could get it to fit but the jam nut was to big so there was no way to secure it properly. The second one seen here is 2.2cm across (and 2cm deep) with a locking spring clip so it fits perfectly in the plastic cover. Now all I need to do is modify the factory mirror mounting plate, drill a hold in the rear hatch metal and pass the wires through to the LCD mirror. The LCD mirror and camera kits both come with lots of cables (25 feet total) so there is no wire splicing needed. Power for the system comes from the reverse lights. Might have to rig up the other camera and use that as a hidden dash cam. That's a mod for another day!
This cover has been messed with in my attempt to fit too big of a camera....not sure if can be saved but I do have a spare cover. Here's what we're starting with folks.

After seeing your repair on the fender flares, I'm sure you can revive this cap. Great mod, can't wait to see the results!
What's the cost on the mirror and IR camera? I can't see shit with my tinted rear window

Re: spacegear backup camera
The cost of the mirror with LCD monitor was $20.00 incl shipping fron china.
The first IR camera was around $15.00
And the second camera was around $12.00
Still cheaper than a all in one kit.
gotta LUV ebay!!

Links?
Does the mirror mount on the windshield? I've been wanting to relocate a miror a little further down on the windshield for a while, I also can't see shit out my rear tint day or night, And the rear mirror hits my kayak when it's on the roof so I can't open the trunk, I might have to kill three birds with one stone.

Re: spacegear backup camera
The LCD mirror clips on the OE mirror. I haven't seen one that bonds to the windshield but if you broke your front glass you would have to transfer the mirror.
TWEET problem.
The backup camera may get installed before the flares.......
Did a test fit last night with the small camera and unmodified cover. nearly a perfect match. The camera lens flange is just a hair smaller than the mirror post hole so the lens either needs a shim or the hole in the cover needs to be modified/added to.
When the hatch opens the plastic triangle cover would not touch your kayak. The camera has a very wide viewing angle too so it would help with the CAN'T SEE SWEETTWEET problem.

Re: spacegear backup camera
Found a stool leg cap that was a perfect fit for the rear mirror trim piece. Home depot 29 cents. bond in place with Gorilla Epoxy.
once it dries the filler piece will be drilled\filed out. then a coat of black paint.
the metal mounting plate needs some creative work and then the dreaded hole in the hatch to feed wires needs to be drilled...(hate that part!)Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Looks like a good fit. I'm looking into getting something similar. Keep posting pearls of wisdom!

Re: spacegear backup camera
The Gorilla Brand Epoxy didn't hold at all. The hardened epoxy peeled clean in one shot from both parts with ZERO residue. Seems the plastic parts are not compatable with this resin.
Will try JB weld next.

Re: spacegear backup camera
That's a shame. I've had good results with it if I clean well with alcohol and give a rough sand prior to bonding.

Re: spacegear backup camera
The GG Epoxy stated on the package its not compatable with certain plastics. I had a 50% chance of the stuff holding so its not much of a surprise it didn't hold with the GG brand stuff. So I upped the game and mixed some JB weld and just for added measure put a prssure clamp on the area overnight. It held and bonded completely. Still a little tacky after 12 hours.......takes forever for JB Weld to cure when temps drop below 20 degrees C.
Might be able to do the hole prep when I get back from work today. Pics to follow as I will probably do a dry fit of the camera on the hatch as well.

Re: spacegear backup camera
got a solid bond with the JB Weld as expected. the rough fit took only minutes.
The mounting plate will be cut/ground to fit the camera.
the plastic cover was painted with grey primer, will do final sand and paint tomorrow.
Side profile of cover and camera. Very stealthy as expected.

That looks really tidy, I've the same problem with the tinted window, this seems the perfect solution.

Re: spacegear backup camera
Yeah I have the link to the seller on eBay. I haven't tested the camera yet so not sure if this will work as needed.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/261948339182?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT
painted the first coat of black and did the first wet sand on Wednesday. Very smooth after 600 grit rub.
2nd coat of paint was done tonight and is looking good. The UV damage on the cover was really bad, the outer layer of plastic fell off llike dust. Glad the cover was worth saving.

Re: spacegear backup camera
Mounting plate needed heavy grinding work to cut the weld.
camera is fully mounted.
Lots of small parts and modifications.
the sheet metal inside the hatch is completely boxed in around the mirror mount area.....had to drill a second hole and feed the wires inside the cabin. not as clean as I hoped bit the rear curtains hide the wires.camera is fully mounted.
