oil pressure light on at idle

Post by Van Diesel »

My oil pressure light has recently started to light up at idle. As soon as I apply some throttle, it goes out. Just recently, I changed the oil but it's the same.

I've found a few related things searching around the forum; oil pressure sensor, thinner oil.

Has anyone else had this and cured it? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Does it stay on solid or flicker?
Mine flickers on idle occasionally which I read is due to the connection wearing out. Some people suggested dropping a piece of solder on it or replacing the sensor tofix the flickering
Sorry i can't be more help!

The Oil Pressure Sending Unit is located near the upper radiator hose connection at the head.

Causes of light flicker...we all know a 4M40 at idle vibrates lots!
  • Plactic clip is worn (very common) which allows the metal connector to wiggle on the sender unit.
The metal female connector is loose and wiggles too much.
The rivet that the brass contact is soldered to is loose on the sending unit.
The sensor itelf is weak inside and voltage signal to the light.
The sensor is an easy fix..see my post in the technical section about How to Change the Thermostat and Oil Pressure Sending Unit

Since my first post, the light started staying on at almost any idle. Sometimes flickering, sometimes solid. After reading your replies, stever1000 and Big-Bird, I was able to find what I believe to be the oil pressure sending unit.

Big-Bird, I tried finding your post but was unsuccessful. But this, "The Oil Pressure Sending Unit is located near the upper radiator hose connection at the head" was good to get me started. Along with, "dropping a piece of solder on it" from stever1000, I found this...

The male connection was totally detached from the unit. I could see the depression on the top that matched the male connector. That's the only reason I really knew they belonged together. Took it all apart and cleaned it and added a little blob of solder (and some electro grease)...

The oil light has not come on since. I assume I fixed it. Did I? Is that actually the oil pressure sending unit?

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like you got it well in hand dude!

Happy to help...but watch for the solder to weaken...you may have to get a new sensor if it starts to leak internally.
