Balance shaft.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Balance shaft.

Post by DexterH »

Hi guys. Just a few more days before I get my head rebuilt.
Last year when I intalled a new seal on the upper balance shaft, I noticed I didnt get a very snug fit but I didnt think I would expect a leak anytime soon. Last night as I took a closer look at that same seal, I saw traces of oil around it. So I want to tackle this problem now before I put back up that head.

A new balance shaft isnt an option as it isnt available here. The company says its a part they would need to special order which takes a couple weeks and bigger bucks than I can afford at this time. I cant get a seal with a size down that can fit snug on the shaft. I can get a used one at a scrap yard buuuut fearful that one may be worn as well and I'd be 'spinning top in mud' as we say here.

Can anyone offer some advice on what can be done?
Is it possible to machine the shaft and put a sleeve on it that the seal can fit? Or would I expect to see oil now coming from the sleeve?

Hoping for some advice.

Upper balance shaft requires the replacement of the bushing. Just about to post details today on my 4D56 head rebuild thread!

Upper balance shaft bushing also can't be reversed in order to reuse it. Chamfered edge must face inwards to allow the oil to circulate.

Hi Tojo,
Unfortunately the shops here don't have the bushing/spacer in stock and they dont seem to be expecting it too soon.
Ok I understand now the purpose of the chamfered edge on the inside so I'm gonna attempt filing the straight edge and using it the opposite direction.

I'll use a drillbit and wrap the end of it with tape and stick that end into the spacer, fitting it as snug as possible. Then I'll connect to my drill and try to get the same degree of chamfer I need as I file it.

I really hate not doing this the correct way but I really dont have much choice as I dont have another week to spare without my van.

Have a great weekend and looking forward to more of your project :-)
