wheel alignment woes

Post by sub-arctic »

I may have run into my first major hang up as far as owning a JDM in the north. I lifted the van, and subsequently NEED an alignment, i have been putting it off as I just got around to doing my upper ball joints too. so far the import service place up here says they don't have the ability to do the aglinment due to the fact that the alignment specs arent in the database for their 40 thousand dollar whizzy new laser alignment machine. They also dont have a mechanic who can do old school alignments either :-( would it be worth while to visit the domestic dealers as well?

the dude at Cambodian tire said they can "service anything" but I neither trust them to do it right, or at all. I get the sneaking suspicion that if i am forced to take my van to CT for service it will magically need lots of spendy work that would be easier and done right if i did it myself. They too have a whizzy machine that magically shows the mechanic how to align it.

So the question I guess out of that tangent is this: if I can find NO ONE to do a good job on an alignment for me in town will I be forced to go south to get it done? or is there a possibility of finding an alignment file for one of those machines to input the specs so that it will be done right. also do those machines have the ability to account for a change in vehicle geometry like ball joint spacers?

this is the start of minor frustration methinks. Maybe i need to buy a plumb bob and a stick of chalk and go to town.

There are a couple of threads regarding alignment specs, here is one of them: http://www.delica.ca/forum/alignment-sp ... html#p2207

Hope this helps you... smiles.

thanks for the link to the specs, Im not sure how confident i am in doing an alignment myself, although I am starting to think thats what it is going to turn into, but maybe I can find some other garage that will do the alignment for me. the hunt continues!

I just completed adding my lift and have attached the info from the alignment. I only needed minor torsion bar adjustment and the same with the alignment. Hopefully this printout will help.

You should be able to print out the alignment specs, take them in to the alignment shop, and say "do this".

It's not rocket science, and if they say they can't do an alignment without the machine telling them what to do then go somewhere else before they damage your Deli.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Thanks for the pdf! thats fantastic!

unfortunately there are extremely limited options as far as shops go up here so I am going to have to hunt around a little bit. maybe even one of the dealerships might be able to take a crack at it. they do say they service "all makes and models" after all :?

My Garage do have a pretty recent elctronic aligment machine, after having entered the values founded here manually, he founded that those are the same as TOYOTA 1990 PICKUP 4WD L4 X-cab. So you can bring these informations with you as they do not have Delica in their NA databank.
BTW: while I was driving alone on the highway late last night, I put my hands off the sterling wheel and was sometime able to do one Km or even more in my track without adjusting my course
