Fuel pump solenoid.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Fuel pump solenoid.

Post by DexterH »

Hi guys. Just wanted to share an experience I had recently, where my van engine had shut off on me while I was doing about 100km/h down the highway. Few weeks before as I was backing out my driveway, the engine stalled abruptly. No hesitation whatsoever, it just stopped. Turned the ignition and it started instantly and worked well since. So down the highway weeks later. Same problem, good thing the highway was clear and I was able to roll safely to the shoulder.

It took a few tumbles but within minutes the engine ran again and I was off again. I did some reading up on this problem by other users and quite a few of them had to replace the fuel pump oil seal I think it was. I didnt come across much posts about the solenoid. Come to think of it, Im not sure I came across any. Its possible I wasnt looking in the right place.

As easy as it seemed to replace the solenoid I still had to take it to a mechanic as I didnt have time to work on it myself. He charged me US$50 and said it was a tough job to get yhe unit off. Turns out it was possibly the original solenoid on the pump and the vehicle and thats 16 years old. When he showed me the old unit, it was busted up in pieces.

Solenoid has been replaced and I havent had any stalling since. Also I seem to be getting a bit more power than before, possibly because the old unit wasnt opening completely to allow proper diesel flow.

So if your L300 is just cutting out like mine did, without hesitations or odd idle, might be a good idea to have the solenoid checked first and replaced if necessary. It sure is easier than replacing that pump oil seal first. That is ofcorse if youre not sure which is bad.

Thanks for reading.

I will try to remember that from here onward. It wasnt a genuine Mitsubishi replacement though. I hope it holds out a couple years. Sorry I didnt even get or ask for the rocker arm assembly part number that I bought yesterday. Truth is, where I live, some retail outlets hesitate to give that info for fear of customers ordering their parts online, thus they lose business. Many of us arent into the habit of asking for the part numbers but I will make that mandatory when next I buy parts so I can share with you guys and gals.

Thanks Lapprentis
