Tightened alternator belts, car runs cooler

Post by gezzza »

Tightened my alternator belts up yesterday , they were a little bouncy watching them at idle. Now my head temp is running 3-5 degrees cooler overall.
I always hesitated tightening them up because it always felt like a chore. Now I have worked out how to do it all from the engine bay with out too much effort.

Step 1 Remove shroud and plastic fan but leave the viscous coupling on.
Step 2 Loosen off alternator locking nut with 12mm socket on a small extension.
Step 3 Make sure the bottom radiator hose has lost pressure and gone soft.
Step 4 Get right into the van and kneel on the passenger side raised panel (under the seat).
Step 5 With a 12mm ratchet spanner , lean right over and feel for the alternator adjustment bolt and turn towards the dash while pushing the radiator hose in a little bit to get good coverage over the bolt.
Step 6 Put everything back.
