Turbo Air thingy

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Turbo Air thingy

Post by FredVenne »

Good day!

Looking at the photo attached, I don't know the actual name of item number one, which is attached to item number two (turbo). My understanding is the item 1 will move up and down depending on how much air is needed and it will open up the turbo as needed.

Am I right?

And is item 2 suppose to be down or up when idle or engine not running?

Cheers!

Fred

It's called the wastegate actuator. I've never adjusted mine as it's already at the optimum setting. Although it has been a while since I tested the PSI, maybe I should see where It's at. Not sure when ~ if I sampled the PSI before or after I put the 2.5" mandrel pipe.

with the engine off the waste gate should be closed fully, that would be in the up position. According to the manual the gate should open at 12psi... however my gate is fully locked and I cannot build more then 10psi.

You idea of how it works is kinda correct.. ish... the waste gate is a bypass around the turbos exhaust wheel. the actuator is a diaphragm with a spring on the underside. when boost pressure hits 12 psi that is enough pressure to overcome the spring and push the actuator down. as the actuator moves down the waste gate valve opens allowing exhaust to bypass the turbo wheel thereby limiting turbine speed and boost.

By shortening the length of the rod one should in theory up the spring preload thereby uping the lvl of boost required to overcome the spring open the waste gate.

also judging by the amount of what looks like carbon around the flange you may have an exhaust leak. check the down pipe gasket isn't leaking.

Thank you all for your response! This is why I love this forum! So my waste gate is fully closed (up). Next oil change I'll bring it at a mechanic and have it checked.

Cheers!!!
