Recommended maintenance modifications....

Post by philmeup1 »

Greetings folks,

I have a '93 L300 Super Exceed that I love to bits. I think I'm in my 3rd year of ownership, and when I got the van, it only had 71,000kms on the clock. Well it's closer to 95,000kms now and it's been a real joy to own and drive. It's been reliable and relatively cheap to maintain. Well it's now winter here in Ontario and very cold. This is the time when I start looking forward to the summer months and all the camping trips with my Deli.

I also tend to read more as the days are cold and short right now. I've been reading lots and searching the forum on mods that might prolong the life of the engine. Especially the problem of cracked heads on the L300 engine. Some things came up frequently. The two that seemed most popular were blocking off the EGR pipe and installing a pyro. Until I started reading about these things, I didn't know what the terms even meant. Yes I'm ignorant but willing to learn.

Having read that cracked heads are a known problem, I decided early on that I would always warm up my engine slowly, drive super chilled, and keep a close eye on all the fluids including my rad.... And while that's all well and good, it does not negate the need for some good preventative maintenance. Apparently it's not hard to get those exhaust gasses up to dangerous levels. A pyro gauge will show this and give you the opportunity to alter your driving and potentially avoid getting a cracked head sooner than later..... I'm all in. Especially since I'm mechanically challenged and would be the guy paying big bucks to have someone qualified do the job. Hello Peterborough Volkswagen!! Goodbye $$$$

So my question is, where do I find one of these pyro gauges, and has anyone posted detailed instructions on how to install? The same would be great for that EGR block off plate. The icing on the perverbial deli cake would then be any other common mods that are usually done with these vans.

I've made it this far and much of this is due to getting a decent Deli in the first place, thank you very much Craig Pollock of Bonsai Rides, Getting great parts and advice from Steven at Rising Sun, and you lot on here at delica.ca with all your input and advice!!

Like I said, my van seems to be running well these days. It certainly doesn't like to start easily when it's -25 in the morning. I've also noticed I have to top up the overflow bottle in the coolant system from time to time (although the rad is always full even when the damn bottle is empty). It doesn't seem to burn oil as I never have to add any between changes. And what the hell, it's got an ice maker..... 8-)

Here's a tip of the tumbler to you folks on here. If anyone has a pyro gauge they want to sell, complete with instructions, let me know. I think I'm ready for the next logical step in preventative maintenance:)

Hi Phil,

Excellent post here: http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3866
You get to see what others have done.

Personally I went with a digital unit from Auberins: http://www.auberins.com/index.php?main_ ... cPath=5_26
Get the "longer cable option" because the stock length was too short for the L300. It's very accurate, and has worked well for the last couple of years. I ended up putting the sensor in the EGR blanking plate using a 1/8"NPT fitting. A bonus is that the temperature sensor is sensitive enough to show your engine temps go from 50 degrees F to 95 degrees F after the glow plug cycle, so you know when the glow plugs are working and when they're not.

As for other mods, my favorite by far was a 2.5" stainless exhaust. Really lets these little diesels breathe a lot easier. Stock exhaust constricts flow which raises the EGT's. Mine seems to pull lightly at 750 degrees F on the highway on flat ground. Then hits up to 1100 degrees F on the uphill climbs under heavy load.

Hey Tojo,

Thanks for this. I didn't see these posts that are in your link and they're fantastic!! I love the pictures as it helps me make more sense of what's going on. I'm almost thinking this is a job I can handle myself, given the correct amount of time. In my case that would be lots of time...

I also like the idea of what you've done. It sounds like killing 2 birds with one stone.

Anyway, I guess this is really something I need to do. I'm gonna go back to the link you sent and read up a little more.

Cheers, Phil

Hey Tojo,

Just another quick question here. Where did you get your EGT Blocking Plate from? And the same question for the exhaust. Is there some who's custom making these things?? The tip of my exhaust has fallen off right near the end. I'm going to have to deal with this problem at some point soon. Might be perfect timing for this 2.5" modification ..... Cheers

2.5" exhaust links:
http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2387
http://www.delica.ca/forum/2-5-mandrel- ... 12245.html

Bought my blanking plates off of ebay from the seller "EGR-delete": http://www.ebay.com/itm/EGR-REMOVAL-KIT ... 6d&vxp=mtr
This seller may also drill and tap a hole upon request.

For my L400 I bought from the seller "myldanautodesignltd" because it came with gaskets: http://www.ebay.com/itm/EGR-BLANKING-PL ... c6&vxp=mtr

CVI and Rising Sun also sell them, give them a call. It should be about $20. 1/8"NPT tapped hole can be done at any machine shop. Other option is welded on. Note that placing the EGT probe in the blanking plate only gets you a temperature reading from cylinder #1, also there is a slight risk that the temperature probe will one day disintegrate and be pitched into the turbo (worst case scenario) BUT it's easy to install. Better way is to install the probe post-turbo in the exhaust, but slightly trickier. Pre-turbo vs. post-turbo also give you different temperature readings. I believe the consensus is about a 200-300 degree F difference, hotter pre-turbo. The good thing about Auberins temperature probes is that they use them on single engine airplanes, so they are built tough.

Awesome!! Thanks Tojo. I'm tipping back a l'il vodka 'n Oj for you here in Ontario and enjoying reading what you've posted. Lots to look at and consider. I totally love your exhaust set up. There's a great muffler shop here in Peterborough that can handle this type of thing. I've been really happy with Rising Sun for parts so I'll email Steven for the block off plate and probably go with the Pyro you've suggested.
I appreciate your input. Cheers 8-)
