New Head + blue smoke *&%^

Post by lutinrouge »

Hello guys,

I'm a recent Delica L300 1993 owner and this is my first post here. I need to tell you that this forum saved my life a couple times.

I recently had massive coolant problems and had to replace my head, timing belt, water pump, rad and all the bling bling. I'm pretty sure all the parts are good quality as I ordered them from CCautos.

Now that I have my new head in, I'm experimenting a lot of blue smoke on start (I'm positive it's blue smoke). My beast was not doing that with my old head.

At the beginning I thought it was some oil that dripped from the old head in the cylinders so I was not worried about it so much. But it is doing that every single start.

After about 50k of driving with I started seeing a dripping leak that seems to come from the front pan. But I have other minor leaks, the classic one in the back where the packing is.

I didn't change my oil yet and I have 0w40 oil in (old oil from winter, I didn't drive it so much this summer). I read somewhere that it might not be good to have 0w40 oil in this motor, I had the information from the old owner, so I guess everybody has an opinion about it.

In summary,

-Oil leaks
-Burning oil

My thinking about the burning:

At best my oil is too thin and it drips in the fresh head assembly that is not crusted and old like my other head.

At worst I have timing issues, valve seals that leaks or a bad turbo (that is looking a little blackish).

My van is running good though and the overheating issues (crossing my fingers) are over. Though, I did see a big cloud coming out of it when I was climbing a hill.

I'm wondering if it's possible that my oil pressure is too high for some reason.

I am all new to mechanic, 2 months ago I wouldn't have been able to find the alternator in my car. I did have some help from a mechanic for some of the really complicated jobs I did on it.

Thanks everybody.

Phil

Well changed my oil and the leak seems to have stop, I'll keep in touch if it was the problem of my blue smoke as well. Oil sure looked nasty! And I did put some Lucas lubrication stuff, lets see if the miracle happens! Alleluia!

Cheers.

Phil, I have not done a head swap on my Deli. However, I have rebuilt engines in the past. New parts, either new head or complete engine, take time to bed in. On gas motor rebuilds, you can expect oil consumption to be higher for the first 500 miles. Head is similar. Until the parts in the head bed in, you may experience higher than normal oil consumption...blue smoke. If the most is on start up, it is oil leaking down the valve guides. This may go away after the break in period.
