I have noticed that my speedometer cable seems to be clicking at speed. I was wondering if anyone has experience in disassembly or access to the cable. I haven't even looked to see how hard it would be, but I thought I'd ask before going after it.
Thanks

Thanks Ronin, I searched but I guess it wasn't deep enough.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
Right.....you might think I am crazy suggesting this, but the clicking noise might not be the speedo cable?
The reason I say this is that I had a very similar noise coming from my dashboard about 4 years ago. I spent weeks trying to find the source of the noise - even driving up & down the motorway (highway?) with various parts of the dashboard removed - including the speedo pod because I was convinced it was the speedo cable too....
I did finally manage to trace the noise and it actually came from the most unlikely place!
Remove the headlamp and there should be a small rubber strip stuck along the top edge of the headlamp unit. This comes loose/free and flaps up & down between the headlamp and the panel above.....but only at certain speeds and makes the exact same noise as a sticking speedo cable!
I have removed the rubber strip completeley and the noise has not come back - nor have there been any adverse effects from removing the strip.
I may be wrong, but it is well worth investigating this as a possible cause....
Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
Regards,
Bruce.
P.S. If you do remove the speedo pod, the speedo cable itself can be a bu**er to get back on properly! Always try and reconnect this first before plugging any of the wiring back in.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
Thanks Bruce, I heard that one before and I checked all my rubber on the front end and no flapping to be seen anywhere. That brings me back to the speedo cable. One other point is that this all started since we had a slight cold snap, down to -20C, unsure this has anything to do with it but I will post what I find (if I find it). Second sidebar, my speedo seems to do minor twitches at highway speeds as well, hence possible poor lubrication or stripped??? Dunno, but I'll find out.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
I noticed a clicking sound the day I picked up my Deli for the first time. The sound wasn't always there... just started then became very regular and loud enough to be bothersome. What I discovered was my trip meter - for whatever reason - was skipping (stuck on the same number). I pushed the reset knob and voila!... problem solved! Hasn't happened since.
I know this sounds obvious to some perhaps but sometimes the problem is just that simple. Just a thought. I hope you get it sussed.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
Toyota had the same problem several years ago, the fix was to remove the inner cable and grind a small amount (1/8 inch) off the square transmission end of the cable. The cable was slightly long and was flexing inside the outer casing causing a click.
I haven't looked at my delica, but usually speedo cable inners can be easily removed by disconnecting the cable at the transmission and just pulling out the steel inner flex cable. Shooting some light oil into the outer cable when re-installing would probably help also.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
I've noticed that our speedo 'clicks' too, but not overly loudly or annoyingly. It actually took me a while to figure out what the ticking noise was. Once I discovered it, it made sense (it is a mechanical device after all).

This great site and the tests people have done has again saved me hours and hours of practicing my 4 letter words trying to find a problem. I was sure my speedo was making this sound of a bunch of bees in a plastic bag. I looked @ lubing the cable but thought a little research was in order first. Removed the rubber strip yesterday and my problem is gone today!!
Thanks Mystery Machine for your research.

Re: Speedmeter Clicking
Sometimes this forum amazes me.
I have had several Delicas and never has any of them made the noise that mine is/ was making . I have been driving this one for over 1 year and as of 2 weeks ago it started making this super annoying noise, starting at 55 km/h and it was right behind my speedo. Not untill i just read the previous post where it said it sounded like "bees in a plastic bag" did i realize this is what i got going on also. I pulled out that rubber strip... no more bees.
thanks people!
