Hi there from London UK

Post by et1310 »

Hi Guys, I'm over from the UK Delica Forum.
After 2 years ownership 2 engines, a head gasket, a little lift, some big tyres and countless hours spent on my back under the bloody thing, not to mention the money spent (i'm sure all you Delica folk know what I'm on about) I may be moving to the states, the United ones! Next year. So I will be stalking your site for info to see if it is possible to import my L400 '94 to Florida.

Welcome to the forum, it sounds like you have a very nice van and have a lot of time invested in it. Unfortunately, in order to register your vehicle in the USA, it has to be 25 years or older.
Live the life you love, love the life you live...

Had: 1991 Mitsubishi Delica L300 SuperExceed, heavily modified (totalled by a drunk driver)
Have: 2011 Acura CSX manual, lightly modified
Want: Mitsubishi Pajero Evo

Actually, of all the 50 states Florida is the *EASIEST* to register an out of country vehicle.

But, here is my advice. Don't do it.

Or, more accurately, don't even pursue it. You will pay the costs of having the L400 shipped on down there - and in the end one of two things will happen:

1) It will be impounded.
2) It will be crushed and destroyed

The reason is a silly law that the US has surrounding crash-test-regulation. Or rather, that is what it is structured to look like. In reality, it is more of a protection scheme for Detroit. It keeps vehicles that were not made for the North American Market out of the country until they are 25 years of age or older.

Again, the reason this is done isn't for safety - it is to hamper competition in the car buying marketplace. :-(

move to canada, import your beastie here!

Problem solved mate!

But the guys are right about the 25year rule. There's always the old Mitsu vanwagon option.....if you can find one.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

In Canada we have a 15 year delay on imports.

:-(

I still don't know how people manage to import Ferraris or Lamborghinis though -- are there two sets of rules?

The rule is specifically designed such that vehichles that have passed NHTSA testing are allowed. Most Ferrari's and Lambo's have passed these tests.

But there is a loophole - For vehicles that have had a manufacturing history of no more than 600 cars - an exception can be made to import the vehicle. Most super-high-end sports cars fall under this category. This law was put into place after Bill Gates, Paul Allen and Jerry Seinfeld all had serious issues with the importation of the Porsche 959.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies. Canada "la belle provence" as my Froggy wife calls it sounds just as good, but I'm afraid it will have to be FL and the US, for work.
As most of us with Delicatitis or AKA the Delica bug, are , and have to be stuborn to keep our trucks on the road. I may buck the system and wait 5 years and then import my beastie.....who knows.
With the price of Diesel and the possibility of running SVO it should be allowed to be imported just on the green aspect.

Ah les yankees!!
