Steerin Wheeeeeeeel

Post by philmeup1 »

Before I purchased my first Delica, a '93 L300 Super Exceed, I owned a bunch of VW Busses. I always liked the commanding view you had as well as the feeling of driving a bus thanks to the extra large steering wheel on the VW's.

I love my Delica but I find the steering wheel is bit too small. It's actually a wooden one and possibly an upgrade from what came standard..??..

At any rate, I'd like to install a larger one on my rig and wondered if anyone has attempted this and if it's a difficult thing to do?? I've got a friend who's a killer woodworker (wood turner actually) who's offered to make me a custom steering wheel on his lathe. But he's got two little kids and really has no time.

If anyone on here has done a mod with this, I'd like to know.

Cheers, Phil

buy the style and size steering wheel from Grant / Momo and adapter kit (you have the kit already just need a larger diameter wheel) and unbolt one wheel and bolt in the other.

I swap out the little 12" Grant my came with to a 15" grant... took 3 minutes in the parking lot of the auto parts store.

So I just answered my own question and went online. WOW, they're not cheap. The 15" wheel that looks just like what's on my van already is like $435.00!!! I didn't realize they'd be so expensive. The description does sound nice though. Deep rich mohogany, ect, ect... I never really put that much thought into a steering wheel before.....

Regardless,, totally cool. So thanks for the info. Might be time to treat my van to somethin new:)

The original wheel is, iirc 15.5", which I find is a bit too big, 14.5 is better... so you could just find someone parting one out etc

black grant leather wheel was around $135.00 dollars. Online you should be able to find for cheaper, even in wood.

I would just buy the same type as what your adapter takes.

Gut to wheel clearance can be an issue...

I like a wheel big enough that I can steer off road with the power steering out...

Well I just orederd one locally here. It's a 15" Grant Grand Touring with the mohogany finish. It looks almost identical to what I've got on my van now, only a little bigger. I'm hoping it will fit with the adaptor that's already on there...
$330.00 all in!!!

Here's hoping it's lovely. Cause I ain't never dropped that kind of $$$ on a steering heel before. Come to think of it,, I've never actually bought a steering wheel until now. All the vehicles I've ever owned came with their own steering wheels...... 8-)
