rebuilding my Mitsu 4d55 with Hyundai parts??
Hi all, I've got an 83' 4d55 that lost compression due to worn rings. I tore the engine down a couple months ago and took it to a machine shop for inspection. Boring .30 over will clean the liners up, and the crank is in good shape so I guess I'm sticking with standard size bearings.
I'm now living in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia for a few months, and Hyundai Porters, Gallopers, Starex vans, etc etc are a dime a dozen here! They all have, from what I understand, my engine in them. I plan on buying my parts here and taking them home to rebuild my engine in a few months. I visited several Korean parts suppliers and they can get me everything I need to rebuild those Hyundai engines, but I've got a few questions first....
Are the Korean parts up to par with Japanese? Can anyone recommend a few Korean brands that have a good reputation? They are cheaper then the Japanese parts I found online, but can I trust them more then the Chinese parts??
Second question is what parts are not compatible with my 4d55?? Here's my "needs" list so far, am I able to just buy these parts for the Hyundai engine and use them to rebuild my Mitsu engine? Are there any parts I'm missing that are necessary for the rebuild (aside from the head/top end, turbo, and injection pump)?
.30 over pistons and rings
main bearings
balance shaft bearings
connecting rod bushings
connecting rod bearings
gasket set
timing belt
oil pump gear
water pump
Thanks all!

Rats. Thanks for the heads up.
I'm having trouble finding the compatibility, but how different can they be, eh?

Wasn't the 4D55 used in the Ford Ranger? What exactly are you driving?

That's the engine. Also the mid 80's Dodge Ram I believe.FalcoColumbarius wrote:Wasn't the 4D55 used in the Ford Ranger? What exactly are you driving?

Re: rebuilding my Mitsu 4d55 with Hyundai parts??
Yea, my 4d55 came out of a 1983 2wd mitsu pick up, but I dropped it into my 2 door montero.
The 4d55 has the same bottom end as the 4d56, so if you have Hyundai parts for a 4d56, that's what I'm looking for! ...I think.
Do you know which 4d56 and Hyundai parts crossover? Does the Hyundai motor use the same block as the 4d56?
Thanks!

wait, wait, wait...nevermind. The 4d56 has a DIFFERENT bottom end. It's the head from the 4d56 I can swap onto my engine.

4D56 Bore 91.1 x Stroke - 95mm
4D55 Bore 91.1 x Stroke - 90.0 mm
Looks like at least the rings will be the same between the two engine, the 56 looks to be a stroked out 55... I've been wondering if I can use the 55 parts in my 56.
I'll be following this thread closely.

Re: rebuilding my Mitsu 4d55 with Hyundai parts??
Thanks tiemyshoe. I haven't had much luck finding any other info, but I'll keep you posted. Hopefully the parts cross ok. How much difference could those 5 little mm make?
I'm wondering if the crankshaft is the same and if the bearings, conn rod bushings, etc are all the same then too. Haven't had the time to look any further, but will soon

If the 56 is a stroked 55 then the crank and roads are most likely different lengths. I'd love to find a 55 to strip apart.

Re: rebuilding my Mitsu 4d55 with Hyundai parts??
well if you want to drive to new jersey you can find my 4d55 in the back of my montero in a friend's driveway. Feel free to poke around! If you want to bore it .30 over and fit some new rings and pistons while your in there, I won't complain....
