Towing

Good morning all of you Pajero owners!

I am looking at, maybe, importing a Pajero and I have a few questions for you.

It seems that most Pajero have a towing hook on the back attached with 4 bolts. Is it easy and inexpensive to change that for a towing part?

If yes, is the towing capacity of these truck decent?

Yes you can buy a hitch that will bolt right on to the tow hook mounting point. The Pajero with the 2.8l will tow not too bad max I would say is 4000lbs as you will be going VERY slow up hills, you just have to take your time when towing. I have a 17' boler trailer I tow and some steep hills I'm doing 60-80kms maxed out.

Should also intall a pyro gauge to make sure you dont over heat the head. Tons of info on here if you use the search button

I am actually looking at a 1998 Exceed E-V45W (petrol) with a 3500cc. I should be more then alright with this. I know, I know... you guys might say it will cost more in fuel, but I am looking for power here.

Nobody is going to get upset about a 3.5l. Especially once you throw on the twin turbo setup from a 3000GT.

I would skip the pyro and just get an aftermarket coolant temp sensor with alarm. In my experience it tells you way more than the pyro. The stock gauge is mostly useless, and if you every lose coolant or something goes wrong you will know to pull over immediately due to the buzzer.

Everyone pushes for the pyro here, but even on the steepest of climbs, full load, 4 people, racks full, small trailer on 33x12.5" mudders it never went over 950 deg. climbing the coq, crowsnest etc. BUT the temp guage spiked on crowsnest and had to pull off to cool down immediately> If i was distracted not looking at the gauge, that could have been a huge tow bill!

Pajerry, I just made the payment for a 1998 Pajero LWB Exceed with a 3.5L V6 24v GDI engine, I don't think I will need to change anything on it. I'll be able to pull my trailer up hills without worrying too much.

Well the 5000km drive from Banff Alberta to Westville Nova Scotia went really well. The trailer was about 4000lbs and the back of the truck was also loaded. I was able to make about 400km with a 90liter tank. So really expensive, but the ride was really nice and smooth. I was keeping a 120 km/hr steady speed most of the way. It took me 4 days to do the drive.
The 3.5 is absolutly amazing. Not quite like my WRX, but still pretty powerful.

For the tow attachment you can get a local metal shop to make you one. I had one made with 3/8" steel that fit the bolt pattern for $40. I can send you pictures if required. Some people insist you need a full tow-bar mounted more securely to the frame, but I disagree after towing a trailer for 3 years with my setup.
