New member from kelowna/squamish

Post by Bdollo »

Just bought a 92 delica l300 in the squamish area and have just moved to kelowna with it. I had to do a bunch of basic engine maintenance such as timing belt, tensioners, water pump, etc and it runs fairly well now. 4x4 hi and low work great. However on any kind of sustained hill it runs really slow and pumps out some black smoke, I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what the cause of that could be?

i hate to say it, but it sounds to me like your IP needs a rebuild.
the black is caused by fuel mixture problems in the IP or seal leaks.
I know all about it. I had to get mine done myself.
are you using any kind of lubrication in your fuel? Canadian diesel fuel needs a lubrication additive, otherwise your IP seals will dry out, resulting in air leakage.

oh, and BTW if you hear ANY squealing from your engine after your timing belt job, check your belts and idler pulley IMMEDIATELY. don't put it off or you WILL have worse problems.

welcome from Kelowna, and good luck with your delica! :)

Define hill and what real slow is?

L300 do not climb fast...up the Coquihalla from Hope you looking 50-60 km/h through the snow shed.

Pushing the throttle down further only increases smoke and raises combustion temperatures that can melt heads/pistons..

How slow was slow (as slow being normal)

Welcome to Delica Canada, Bdollo :M

Could be a leak in your air intake system. Maybe check around your EGR. What shape is your air filter element in?

Falco.

I have a feeling it may be the IP as well, thanks for the advice....What kind of additive would you recommend?

On my drive on the Coq I was only able to do about 30-40. I'm not concerned about engine temperatures at all as I had all the major engine work when I bought it, along with a new engine temperature gauge which is reading very accurately and is only at about one quarter of the gauge most of the time.

I am honestly not too sure what the air filter element is, any info or pictures would be highly appreciated!

The air filter element is the paper cylinder in the air filter system that the air passes through on it's way to the turbocharger. It's in the air filter housing that is located behind the front right wheel. If you lay on the ground and look up you will see a round canister with two hook latches; undo them and that piece comes off (it's actually a particulate tray with a one way valve to let any water out that gets that far, usually from fording, &c.); what you see then is a wing nut, undo that and the element slides out (to put back in ~ reverse the process).

Once you have the element out go to a darker corner of wherever you are and shine a trouble lamp into the side and look into the centre and see how much light is getting through. The less light, the more clogged up the element is. The paper of a new filter element should be a soft white colour.

Wooo, boy, not a good approach. He isn't talking about coolant temperature. It's important for driving through the interior that you install an EXHAUST GAS temp or EGT gauge. Coolant temp and exhaust temp are only very loosely related, and in many cases the exhaust temp is what's really critical. Any hard-working turbodiesel can exceed safe internal combustion temperatures that over time will wreck your head. Do some searches on here about cracked heads and you'll find out what happens when people don't monitor EGT. Almost certainly if you have black smoke you'll have excessive EGT. With these vans you cannot put it to the floor without hitting EGT exceeding 1400 degrees F, which is too high. There is a lot of debate about what the red zone is, but pedal to the floor exceeds it by a large margin.
