Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Cold Starts/Engine Revving High...

Post by philmeup1 »

Hey everyone,

Yesterday I posted about having difficulty starting my van as it was freezing outside. I received some great advice here and managed to get it to go:)

One of the things my van does is rev up a bit once it's started. This is only in the winter months when it's cold out. After about 4 or 5 mins the revs will come back down and it will idle quite nicely.

Well yesterday after I finally did get it going it revved up high enough that I contemplated switching off the engine... I didn't though and after a few minutes the idle came back down and everything smoothed out fine. I was afraid I might do some serious damage to the motor...

Since owning this van which has been a little over a year now, I've tried to be as proactive as possible when it comes to the maintenance. It only has 80,000 kms on the clock now and it's quite mint overall. I've read several times on here from other members that it's best to let these vans warm up slowly which I always do. I'll fire mine up and let the revs come back down before driving it.

But yesterday!!,, Man, I was a tad worried with how high it was revving.. Maybe something's amiss here?? I don't want to bugger up the motor prematurely....

Any input is appreciated as always

Cheers, Phil

What do you consider as high RPM?

That's a good question. I was not inside the van when it was revving up the way it was. However it was a similar scenario this morning. After I got it to start, and it's still really cold here, it went up to a little over 3000 rpms. It didn't sound quite as bad as yesterday but it sure seems taxing on the motor...

Thank god there's only 6 months of winter left, lol

That poor engine... 3000 rpm when cold= bad thing man, the engines life with be shortened drastically if that keeps going on.

Yeah, And I'm talking freezing cold going up to 3000 rpm's!!!

So any suggestions here?? It looks like it's going to be a freezing cold winter here in Ontatio..... And if this keeps up, I'm certain I'll have this motor cooked within the next few months.. :(

A few things to investigate:

1. Throttle cable adjusted with some slack, and spray lubricant down the housing
2. Is the A/C turned off? Faulty high idle solenoid
3. Vacuum leaks

A few links:

Awesome,, Thanks Tojo!!!

It really only gets revving up high when it's freezing cold out. The colder it is, the higher it seems to rev.... And it's been freezing here!!!!!!!!

In the summer months it's a non issue.

Anyway, I'm going to investigate this stuff immediately!!

Ok so I've made this a priority and Got it in the shop at the school where I work today. The auto teacher is pretty good but obviously has never worked on a Delica before...

We poked around with a few things like the throttle body and this little plastic thing that I think he called an actuator (sorry, I'm mechanically declined here) Anyway I'm hoping I added the picture properly but it's located just on the passenger side of the engine bay and has two vacuum hoses coming off it. He tried to get the one hose off this little plastic thing and broke the end off in the hose... He then said, "This might be your problem right here." I laughed and said, It is now"!!!!

But all kidding aside, I'll need to replace this now. He told me it shouldn't rev up like it was with this out of the equation. I may have to stay on the throttle until it warms up in the morning but I'd rather that for now until I can get it sorted properly. We capped off the two vacuum hoses as well just temporarily.

That's all I have for today,, Thanks for reading and the help here:)

I can't see a picture but you need the vacuum hoses connected properly to run the engine. Odds are that was something on the ip pump.

Yeah, I couldn't manage to get the picture up of little part we ended up breaking and then bypassing. It's a small black cylindrical thing about the size of your thumb Anyway, when I fired the engine up this morning it behaved exactly as before and revved right up to 3000 rpm's for about 3 mins. Again it's still really cold here so I'm worried every time this happens...

Everything in the engin area looks good. Well, other than that part we broke yesterday. I doubt it's a vacuum leak because it does eventually rev back down and run perfectly. Would the problem not persist if there was a constant leak?? The throttle cable looks good too but I am going to lube that up anyway.

Maybe the high idle solenoid as suggessted earlier.... I guess I'm gonna keep poking around here and keep trying. It's tough as I'm not a mechanic and there's no one in my area that really works on these things specifically...

Maybe it's time to move to BC, lol
