Hi Everyone!
My wife and I just bought our first Delica. A 1996 Spacegear Petrol burner. (yeah, one of those) It is a Super Exceed Long wheel Base that has been happily serving a nice family on Vancouver Island for the past two years. When I talked to Gary at Coombs Country Auto about having brought it over he was very enthusiastic and after driving it for the past couple of weeks I understand why. It really is tons of fun to drive.
Although I have been a Volvo driver for years I thought I would make the switch from “safety first driving” to “camping imminent” driving. This will be my daily driver and will act as a pick up truck a few sizes larger than the volvo wagon. I have several friends with Delicas and after speaking to them and EVERY Delica owner getting out of his or her vehicle over the last few months, I increased my interest level from hmmm to desire to obsession. I test drove a few and talked to a couple of mechanics, and got closer and closer to ownership. I was surprised to find this one a stone’s throw away from my Mother-in-law’s place on Vancouver Island.
After a ferry ride over and an inspection and test drive as night fell, we felt we had found a fit. My wife, Dani loves green so the colour part worked out just fine. Insofar as a name seems to be de rigueur here, we are thus christening her the ‘ca, or just ‘ca for short
Because it has never lived in the big city of Vancouver, It had never had the indignity of an Aircare test, or the subsequent shame of an aircare fail ( too much NOx). There are several-ok,ok-many EGR threads about the turbo diesel, but not as many on the gasoline fed engine. It’s ok, I’ll get used to it. I am going to have to figure out what the EGR valve looks like and where it is. I hope to take it off, clean it and put it back on. Then after running awhile, we will be ready for the Aircare joust again.
The first change I had to make was to build a one meter long extender for the plastic pass card that lets me into and out of work everyday. With a wooden dowel, I am now able to reach the activation for the gate.
The second project was to repair the beverage holder drawer so that it worked correctly.
Next up will be to replace the windshield wipers and clean out the windshield fluid lines and nozzles to try to get them working again.
Although it came to me with a delightfully modern car stereo head unit, the amplifier and speaker components will require significant beefing up.
Longer term project include investigating the faintness of the window defrost, and removing the very cute mud splash decals,
There is a single recalcitrant crystal lite shade that will twitch and move at the push of a button, but not yet open and close like its brethren. That must be dealt with.
The other project of great seriousness is that Dani REALLY wanted an intact Karaoke machine with any Delica we settled on. She was brave and overcame her disappointment when this one came sans Karaoke machine. She had grand visions of road trips and camping groups revelling in Karaoke magic. Since I let her down in this respect, I feel it is now important to try to make good on this. The head unit has bluetooth and with luck I can find a karaoke program on the iPad that can hook up to it, …we might be in business…

Only Deli I've seen with a working karaoke stereo is Luckydads you need to have both the original stereo head unit and the original rear karaoke unit, most people have remove the Japanese stereo and installed North American stereo

Welcome to the good side of delica. A little bias there but nice to have another gasser on board. No karaoke on mine but as far as aircare, no problem, all the gassers pass okay.
Mine's a 4 cyl but should increase to a V6 sometime soon. I can't complain as my gasser has been problem free and looks to be great forever.
Buy your wiper blade refills from Napa thru Telus or BC hydro, it's the cheapest and sometimes the looong length is hard to find. They probably stock your oil filter but I go to Lordco for my air filter.
