Melted mystery connector thingy... any ideas?

Post by Jonny5ive »

I have been smelling burning plastic in my Super Exceed on and off for a while now. Finally found the source... any ideas what the hell this is?

It's located under the steering next to the fuse box. Its covered with a black rubber case with a lid. Under the lid there seems to be a melted fuse... not sure what the hell it is or what it does.

A red wire goes into it from one end and comes out the other side and into a black cube. The black cube has 4 wires plugged into it.

Any help is appreciated.

Another angle. You can see how melted it is and the red wire that plugs into a black cube thing.

There is a rubber case around the whole thing... the yellow you see looks like a melted fuse.

The melted rubber thing closed. It's located next to the fuse box under the steering column...

Looks like a fuse into a relay. Probably something someone else has installed. Lights, fog lights , stereo...everything still work?

J5
Looks just like the aftermarket fuse I wired off my battery for my driving lights, backup lights and rewired cigarette lighter.
Something must have shorted to ground for that much heat.

Thanks for the replies guys...

Yeah I thought it might be some aftermarket fuse, but what the hell it's for? I'm at a loss. I checked everything out, lights stereo, wipers, fans, dash lights... everything seems to be working, no warming lights. I haven't installed any after market bits.

It's a freaking mystery. It's seriously melted, and was quite hot to the touch, so it does concern me. Especially if it's for something that I might need in a pinch.

Do your DRL's still work? That looks like a system I've seen before.

Indeed my DRL's are out!

Damnit! So, mystery sorted... now, anyone recommend somewhere in Vic that can fix it up?

Or for a handy guy, not so knowledgeable about mechanics and even less about electrical systems... any idea how to fix it?

Cheers! I appreciate all the help!

any mechanic should be able to do this pretty standard for USA imports...

Personally I would just turn on the lights with the engine (no legal but is safer with the tail lights anyhow)... but you need to remove power from this vehicle fire first
