Mysterious Wires

Post by Morganizer »

Ah, the joys of used car ownership!

I've discovered a couple of wires under my floor mats that obviously weren't part of the Master Plan.

There's a red wire that runs form the battery terminal to the windshield wiper harness. My guess is if I disconnect it, the wiper motor won't go. Probably a previous owner got fed up trying to fix it and improvised. But why does it go into a hole in the duct work? And why are there several holes drilled and unused? Is this related to the Rattle Under the Dash?

The other mystery wire is a blue wire, found under the driver's seat. It extends under the floor mat, where it's not connected to anything. It goes into the hatch behind the driver's seat, where it disappears into one of those black plastic cable shrouds. What's that wire shroud normally for? Where does it go? Does your Delica have one?

Where you have a blue wire I have a couple of boxes that makes up the 'ECU' as far as an L300 is concerned...

You are correct in that those wires are not part of Mr Mitsubishi's master plan the wire going to windshield could be a replacment power feed to the park circuit on the winshield wiper, if thats whats happening it means the wiper switch relay has died which means you need a new wiper/headlight combo switch. The blue wire i don't know what its for or could be for. if its noting going any where pull it out i've pulled out tons of crappy wiring in Delis.Cheers Jay Tardis Deli

As it turns out, the red wire was someone's attempt to create Day Time Running Lamps. They picked off power from the wiper harness, and ran it to a relay behind the left headlight. Which got all corroded, and the wires fell out. Stupid arrangement, really. I yanked it all out, and the wipers work fine.

I think that blue wire is supposed to be connected to the parking brake so the light goes on when it is set

1st thing I did when I got my deli was yank out an apple crate worth of wires and switches... didn't matter what it ran to if it didn't belong from factory it came out. One thing I have learned over the years of owning clapped out dilapidated piles of somebody else's failed project... is 99% of electrical problems are due to some fools idea proper electrical work. Yank it out and to it yourself.. and do it properly. Least that's my moto now.

In the cae of my Deli not one of the wires, switches, relays I pulled out actually went to anything.. it was all old stuff that had been ripped out and the wires left zip tied, duct taped, twisted or jammed into places it should never have been.
