Aircare numbers anyone?

Post by Drumster »

It's been almost a year... Wow!
Anyway, took the van into Aircare & paid $45!!! to have the 4M40 (L400) tested for "opacity", whatever that is. :?
Mine registered 1.59 out of an allowable 30.

Also, in a two minute or so test, it was determined that the beast uses 12.9 liters per 100 km. I'd like to know how they came up with that figure.

So what kind of numbers have you guys got out of Aircare and would anyone be able to explain the diesel "Opacity" thing to me?
Cheers!
I'm here to learn.

It turned out to be a projection, that is ~ what they figure your machine should be doing. First they said that I average 23,000 per year, more like thirty. Then I read that I should be doing 13/100Km ~ I went into the office on that one and told them point blank that I did not run that kind of ship and I can get 8.5. Then they projected that I dump eight tonnes of carbon into the heavens, the little arrow was right at the red end of the scale. My readings: Passing 30.00 Average 6.00 Mine 0.00. Read 'em an' weep. I really don't understand how this actually works ~ but I'm good to go for the next couple of years.

I love these machines.

Falco, sounds like they screwed up on your test... but you came out ahead so good on you!

But here's my real data, with scanned copy of my results:
http://www.delica.ca/forum/wvo-aircare- ... ht=aircare
(you'll find other people's results on that post)

Don't want to rub it in Drumster but I got 0.09% opacity on my old 300... That should be what, 15x better than your results? (ok, I cheated a bit but can't blame me...) 8-)

Joking aside, your numbers are excellent.

Considering all our counts are below two I thin it's possible to get 0.00, I guess it depends how the Air Care machine is calibrated at any given time. What I find interesting are the averages. My IP is on the lean side. I think that because my "projections" were so dire then it really made me look like an angel, which of course, the Miss Lil' Bitchi is... 8-)

Mine was 13.27% opacity in Feb 2010. I've since had my first CVI Deli tune in Mar 2010. Smoke on start-up dropped out of sight, but I'm still blowing black smoke in the summer time with little acceleration. Maybe has something to do with my side exhaust as I can now see every bit of it in the mirror. My EGR valve is going soon.

Not sure why, but my fuel consumption was indicated by AirCare as 8.5 l/100Km. I usually get about 11-12. Hence my CO2 calculation was only 0.8 Tonnes/yr.

Wow, my opacity test reads 20.05%! What does that mean?

It says Im at 13.4L/100k which is close as its closer to 12L/100k, and apparently I drive 7500 km/year.. lol

What a joke, its the first time having to do it in BC, and I sure feel taken advantage of.. 45 bucks for a half hour inconvenience. For what we pay in fuel taxes and insurance rates, it should be free. Its simliar to Alberta's registration policies. Every year you have to re-register the vehicle costing 70 bucks if I remember correctly.

Wow, time for a tune up, guys! I remember them running the mirror under the van then doing the test... then running the mirror under the van again. In retrospect I suspect they were double checking for the hole. I'm thinking that because the projections on the MLB were so bad that... that.... maybe the machine got calibrated differently..... actually I have no clue ~ Pass.

Just got mine done for our 1994 V6 3L gas engine, and it did extremely well - ranked near the "best" in CO2 at 4.8 g/Km! who knew?
